This weekend at Salt Creek will be the 10th annual Cosmic Creek surf Festival. It?s a throwback event that features a surf contest in which competitors ride equipment from surfing?s psychedelic era. Single fins, twins, Bonzers, and of course fish of all shapes and sizes will be in full effect. Saturday evening there will be a concert featuring Donavon Frankenriter at [seven-degrees]. Proceeds will support the Surfrider Foundation. For tickets and more info go to Billabong.com/cosmic.

Ian Cairns of Laguna Beach is leading the first PacSun USA Longboard Team in competition as its head coach this week at the ISA World Longboard Championships at Huanchaco, Peru. The team consists of returning ISA World Team members Tony Silvagni (Carolina Beach, N.C.) and Taylor Jensen (Oceanside) who were joined by winners at the Surfing America USA Championships at Church, San Onofre State Beach, in June. The team consists of Silvagni and Jensen in the Open Men division, Rachael Tilly (Capistrano Beach)

Cairns coaches Team USA to surf title Laguna Beach resident Ian Cairns, recently named coach of the PacSun USA Surf team, led the team to the gold medal Aug. 9 at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Costa Rica. It was the first time that the Americans had won an overall gold medal in 13 years, since Team USA won at the 1996 World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach. ?We had good surfers and what we did was to stay very concentrated,? Cairns said in a release. ?

Laguna Beach?s Taylor Pitz has been named to the 2009-10 PacSun USA Surf Team following her performance last week at the SIMA Surfing American USA Championships at the Huntington Beach Pier. Pitz, who will be a junior at Laguna Beach High, made the U.S. team for the third straight year. She was one of five selected for the girls? Under-18 team, along with U.S. Open women?s champion Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana, Kaleigh Gilchrist of Newport Beach, Lakey Peterson of Santa Barbara and Quincy Davis from New York.

For decades now, in the world of professional surfing, it has been said that the proving grounds take place each year on the island sands of the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. This was perhaps never better displayed than in the winter of 1976 when a brazen group of young Australians, who had fantastically coined themselves the “Bronzed Aussies,” ambushed the hallowed surfing grounds of the north shore. The group — which consisted of Mark Warren, Ian Cairns, Peter Townend and young upstart Cheyne Horan — had made a name for themselves by charging big waves and placing well in the Hawaiian events.

It’s led up to this, the hours and hours that Taylor Pitz has spent in the water perfecting her craft. Next month it will be go time for Pitz on the world stage. Pitz, a junior at Laguna Beach High, was named to the PacSun USA Surf Team. She will be on the Girls’ Under 18 team for the upcoming Quiksilver International Surfing Assn. World Junior Surfing Championships. The prestigious contest will go down beginning Jan. 18 in Piha, New Zealand. Pitz has been on the national team three years running, but this year she will take a bigger role.

Alissa Carins of Laguna Beach won a copper medal in the Women Masters division and helped Team USA to a gold medal at the International Surfing Assn. World Masters Surfing Championships at La Libertad, El Salvador on Sunday. Team USA, coached by surfing legend Ian Cairns, won the Eduardo Arena ISA World Team Trophy with a score of 9,396. Carins was one of four USA team members to medal, joining Tom Curren (Kahunas division, gold), Jim Hogan (Kahunas division, silver) and Allen Sarlo (Grand Kahunas division, copper)

The defining moment of Taylor Pitz?s experience at the International Surfing Assn. World Junior Championships probably occurred in Qualifying Round Three. Pitz had done well in the first two heats at the event, which concluded in Piha, New Zealand, on Jan. 28. She won both her first two heats, but the third round was stacked. The Laguna Beach High junior would be going against her PacSun Junior National teammate, Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana, who finished second individually at the event last year and was also the 2009 U.S. Open of Surfing women?

The 48th annual Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade scheduled for Saturday is a go as of Thursday afternoon, even with rain in the forecast. The parade committee met Wednesday and decided not to cancel, President Ed Hanke wrote in an email. Hanke could not be reached for further comment Thursday to elaborate on details of the committee's discussion, but committee treasurer Sandi Werthe said a final determination on whether to cancel will be made Friday afternoon and posted on the parade website, http://www.lagunabeachparade.org . Hanke said in an email earlier this week that parade organizers have dealt with impending storms.
