Laguna resident and lifelong skateboarder Eric Kirkland has invented the Nuclear Pickle, a longboard that enables tool-free adjustments and smoother rides. Recently adopted by Alliance Board Sports in Escondido and scheduled to hit stores in the fall, Kirkland said it is the only longboard on the market that does not require a tool to make on-the-road adjustments to the truck — the axle unit to which the wheels are attached. “This board can cruise,” he said.

Joe and Halle Redfearn, siblings from Thurston Middle School, are two of 15 student inventors from around the country who are finalists for the crown of Top Inventor in the third annual Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors. The Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts is accepting applications for the [seven-degrees] of Inspiration grant, a $5,000 prize that will allow the winner to complete a project over the next 11 months. Torrey AndersonSchoepe Retired dentist Eduardo Burgueno's aching back has led him to launch a new, international business. Burgueno's Disc Traction Belt -- known affectionately as Love Handles -- was awarded a bronze medal in May by the French Society of Sports Medicine at the Concours Lepine, a Paris competition sponsored by the Association of Inventors and Manufacturers. Burgueno -- a native of Uruguay and a Laguna Beach resident for 22 years -- practiced dentistry in Los Angeles for about 12 years.

Laguna Independent publisher leaves Tom Johnson, publisher of the Laguna Beach and Newport Beach Independent newspapers, said Wednesday that he was resigning because he disagreed with his employers over issues related to advertising. "There was some questionable handling of ad rates, offering one company a low rate and another a high rate," said Johnson. "I have a problem with that ethically. If it blows up, it's my reputation. " Johnson has been publisher of the Newport Beach Independent since its first issue came out in June.
