Assistance League seeks donations The Assistance League of Laguna Beach is seeking donations for its semi-annual garage sale and thrift shop June 4 and 5. Items needed include women?s clothes, men?s clothes, baby items, books, household items, jewelry, shoes, small decorative items, bedding, accessories and toys. The group cannot accept computers, furniture or beds. Donors will receive a tax-deduction receipt. Donations can be delivered to the Turnabout Thrift Shop, 526 Glenneyre St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Silber and Silber This is a sweet and culturally interesting Iranian film directed by Majid Majidi. The story takes place on a construction site in Iran where Both Iranian and Afghanistan refugees work. When a young Afghani boy is given the cooking and serving job held by an Iranian young man, resentment and anger follow. We watch this seething character discover a secret about his replacement, which changes him forever. The growth and transformation within this character is the focus of the film and is fascinating to watch.

The Laguna Beach family of one of the three Americans detained in Iran for straying over the border from Iraq learned this week that the trio face charges of espionage. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad announced Monday that the three had broken his country’s law and would have to convince a judge they were innocent of spying. Iranian officials reportedly said the investigation was ongoing and the status of the hikers would be announced “in the not-too-distant future.

The Laguna Beach relatives of a hiker detained in Iran since July held a vigil Wednesday evening at Main Beach to show support for the effort to free Sarah Shourd and her two friends. Words spoken by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday in New York brought a measure of comfort to the family of Sarah Shourd , one of the three young Americans detained in Iran. “We are feeling hopeful after Ahmadinejad’s speech last night,” Susy Sandys said Wednesday. “His exact words were that he would seek maximum leniency for the three American hikers who strayed across the Iranian border.” Sandys’ husband, Dr. Michael Sandys , is the brother of Shourd’s mother, Nora . The Sandyses are a well-known family in Laguna.

He's embarrassed himself in front of Elvis and been embarrassed by Salvador Dali. He transitions between discussing opera, architecture and literature with deftness. And now he's in Laguna. Two shows featuring works by Swedish abstract master Karl Momen are now on display at Endangered Planet Gallery and Marion Meyer Contemporary Art. The Endangered Planet show features new works, created especially for the gallery, and the exhibit at Marion Meyer is home to his classic works.

The Chabad Jewish Center of Laguna Beach welcomed an exciting addition into its family Sunday as a new Torah Scroll was completed. The celebration came as the center was gearing up to celebrate the Jewish new year. “This is like a new entity that is joining us for the new year,” said Rabbi Eli Goorevitch. This is the first Torah dedication since one was dedicated 13 years ago for Chabad’s opening. Dedications are rare because the scroll is a hand-written work of art. Rabbi Aaron Shaffier, a Torah scribe who works from Israel, said the process takes more than a year.
