Four-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Janet Evans will lead the 48th Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade as grand marshal, according to a news release. The March 1, 2014, parade will feature the theme, "Home of the free because of the brave. " The Laguna Beach resident and 2004 inductee to the United Sates Olympic Hall of Fame will be featured, along with other parade honorees, at the Feb. 2 Honorees Fundraiser Brunch. The parade is supported by the brunch, program ads and donations.

Evans on hand at swim event Laguna Beach resident Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medal winner, was in attendance Sunday in Corona del Mar to lend her support to the Swim For Life Foundation?s water safety awareness-raising ocean swim. She congratulated the 250 swimmers, including fellow Olympians and other local residents of all ages who are passionate about water safety, as they completed the one-mile, non-competitive swim. The ocean swim was an effort to promote Swim For Life?

Andrea Reigel, who will enter Laguna Beach High School in September, turned in another strong showing at the 2005 Southern California Junior Olympic Swimming Championships last weekend. The four-day event was held at the Janet Evans Swim Complex in Fullerton. The event marked the sixth straight year that Reigel, who graduated in June from Thurston Middle School, has competed at the summer Junior Olympics. Last year, she claimed nine medals -- five of which were gold.

Shawn Pfendler, who will be senior at Laguna Beach High in September, swam 10 events over a five-day period at the recent Long Course Junior Olympics swim meet held at the Janet Evans Olympic Swim Complex in Fullerton. Pfendler, who qualified in seven individual events but could only swim a maximum-allowed six, also saw a leg on four relay teams for his Nova club team. The meet marked the third consecutive year that Pfendler's points helped Nova capture first-place in its division.

The 48th annual Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade scheduled for Saturday is a go as of Thursday afternoon, even with rain in the forecast. The parade committee met Wednesday and decided not to cancel, President Ed Hanke wrote in an email. Hanke could not be reached for further comment Thursday to elaborate on details of the committee's discussion, but committee treasurer Sandi Werthe said a final determination on whether to cancel will be made Friday afternoon and posted on the parade website, http://www.lagunabeachparade.org . Hanke said in an email earlier this week that parade organizers have dealt with impending storms.

Mike Sciacca Shawn Pfendler recently finished the "long course" swimming season with a trip to the Junior Olympics, and he went about the season-ending meet at the Janet Evans Olympic Swim Complex in Fullerton, the way few athletes do. The Laguna Beach High junior competed in 11 events -- the maximum number allowed by Junior Olympic rules -- and swam the most events of any swimmer on his Novaquatics club team....

Four hundred Southern California spectators flocked to Corona del Mar’s main beach on Sunday, September 20, as approximately 250 swimmers between the ages of 6 and 75, residing as far away as Brixham, England; Phoenix, AZ; Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, and San Marcos, CA, took to the waves during the Swim for Life Foundation’s annual ocean swim to raise awareness of water safety measures.  Three-time Olympian Janet Evans of Laguna Beach was among the first to congratulate each swimmer as they exited the waves.
