Chabad celebrates Purim with disco Chabad Jewish Center will celebrate ?Purim Night Fever,? starting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a ?70s style disco-themed event with a deejay, dancing, arts and crafts, face painting, dinner and a reading of the Megillah with simultaneous slide show at 5 p.m. Chabad is at 30804 S. Coast Hwy. The holiday of Purim commemorates a time of trepidation and suffering for the Jewish population in the 4th century....

Purim carnival at Chabad Circue de Purim, featuring Russian veteran circus performers, makes its debut on Thursday at 6 p.m., at the Chabad Jewish Center. The Purim celebration will also feature face painting, arts and crafts, balloons and fun. Those who come in circus costume can win a prize. The holiday of Purim commemorates a time of trepidation and suffering for the Jewish population of Persia living in the fourth century B.C.E. It is also a celebration of survival against odds.

The recent disclosure by actress Angelina Jolie that she had undergone elective bilateral mastectomies to reduce her risk of breast cancer provides an opportunity to understand the science behind the BRCA gene mutation she carries. Jolie's mother died in 2007 of ovarian cancer at age 56, an indication for Jolie to consider BRCA gene mutation testing. Also in the news is the recent passing of Pierce Brosnan's 41-year-old daughter, Charlotte Brosnan, from ovarian cancer. Charlotte's mother, Brosnan's deceased wife Cassandra Harris, died of ovarian cancer in 1991.

It's high time Laguna memorialized its very prominent South African community and officially declare itself Little Cape Town. It could be great for business. More people would see us as a smaller version of that gorgeous resort town on the tip of Africa's Southern Hemisphere, where the dramatic, rugged mountains cascade to the sea.
