Dante Liberi Laguna artist Dante Liberi died last week. Born in 1919, Mr. Liberi was an artist, sculptor and former gallery owner from Laguna Beach. His paintings have been on exhibit for several years at Lu Martin Galleries and Anastasia Cafe, and he had been an exhibitor at the Festival of Arts. Mr. Liberi worked as an artist his whole life, saying he was not happy unless he was painting. Growing up in Brooklyn in an immigrant Italian working-class family, Mr. Liberi quit school in the seventh grade and became and artist.

A world-class event, CaDance Festival, will take center stage in Laguna Beach from Oct. 1 to Oct. 9, offering a full menu of top dance performances, master workshops and classes, an Oscar-nominated dance documentary with two of its stars in a attendance, and a gala event with Patrick Swayze. An esteemed dance professional for more than 20 years, Jodie Gates, the festival's artistic director, is bringing internationally recognized dancers and premier dance companies for the nine-day event.

French romantic comedy to premiere The Laguna Beach Film Society will premiere the French romantic comedy, ?I Do (How to Get Married and Stay Single),? at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Coast Cinemas. The film asks, ?What can the pampered, only son do when his sisters and mother decide that at 43 he should be married and living elsewhere? Maybe fake an engagement to a woman hired to leave him at the altar?? Tickets are $15 at the door, or $20 to participate in the pre-film wine and hors d?

Suzie Harrison Straight off performing on Broadway, renowned dancer Jodie Gates will bring the world of dance to Laguna with premier dance companies for Saturday's Dance Day. Gates spent last week dancing with the Complexions Dance Company at the Joyce Theatre in New York City. The new Artistic Director of Gallimaufry Dance in Laguna has come a long way from her Northern California roots. "At 15, I was discovered in Sacramento by director Robert Joffrey; he asked me if I would like to come to New York," Gates said.

Most of the Laguna Dance Festival is focused on professional performances and master classes, but festival artistic director Jodie Gates still found time to reach children with Dancing Hands on Wednesday. The two-hour workshop, conceived from scratch by the former Joffrey Ballet star, blended movement and painting. It was held in the middle of the weeklong festival, which concludes Sunday. About 30 grade school-age kids, mostly girls, attended Dancing Hands. “They were very creative and energetic,” Gates said.

Andrew Edwards In Laguna, first you start a theatrical company, then you get some dancers, then you start the music. That, at least, was Steve Josephson's plan when he founded Gallimaufry Performing Arts. "My idea for the company was to have three divisions, one for each of the disciplines of the performing arts," Josephson said. He started with theater, Gallimaufry's first show was "42nd Street," which debuted in July. He became one step closer to completing his trifecta when Gallimaufry merged with another Laguna group, the California Choreographers Dance Festival.

A new wave of dance will roll into Main Beach when CaDance unravels its fifth annual Laguna Dance Festival. Award-winning pianist at Forum Laguna Beach Live! will present a performance by Paul Anthony Romero, the winner of the 2004 Van Cliburn Foundation International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs. Romero will perform a variety of works from Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Tcherepnin and Ponce at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Forum Theater on the Festival of Arts grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for full-time students, and can be purchased at www.lagunabeach live.

The Gallimaufry Performing Arts CaDance Festival is bringing in heavy star power: Patrick Swayze will be the featured guest at the gala reception Saturday night at Laguna Art Museum. Swayze fits the bill with his outstanding acting and dancing ability, perhaps best showcased in the 1997 hit movie "Dirty Dancing." His career includes popular favorites "Ghost" and "Point Break." Swayze's dancing career is esteemed as well. He has been with the Houston Jazz Ballet Company, Harkness Ballet Theater School in New York, Joffrey Ballet Company and Eliot Feld Ballet Company.
