Three Laguna Beach runners earned high placements at the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation cross-country meet Dec. 14 at Wilson Park in Torrance. The runners, sponsored by the city of Laguna Beach Community Services Depaprtment, were Adam Mitchell, Johnny Mitchell and Tryler Cheves. Adam Mitchell won the boys? Division 2000 (year born) 1-kilometer race with a time of 3 hours 54 minutes 6 seconds. His brother Johnny finished in sixth place with a time of 4:12.

Laguna Beach kids from second to eighth grade practiced and competed from December to February in Laguna?s new flag football league. ?This was the first year we brought this league to Laguna and we had great success,? said Chris Herry, the league?s organizer and assistant coach at Laguna Beach High, in a release. Herry had more boys signed up to play than he had teams with coaches. There were four elementary division teams that competed against one another and four junior high teams competing against one another.

LAGUNA BEACH — At 10 years old, Laguna Beach native Brandon Sears first competed in the Victoria Skimboards World Championship of Skimboarding with a Victoria “foamie” board. He’s been a mainstay at “The Vic,” making it to the final heat of the professional division several times but never coming out with a win. That changed Sunday, as Brandon C. Sears – also known simply as “BCS” – got his win, taking the professional division final at the 33rd annual event held over the weekend at Aliso Beach.

Once again, the Laguna Beach kids won a gold medal in club water polo. On May 1 and 2, Laguna's 10-and-under club water polo team went to San Diego to compete against some of the best water polo teams in the state. Laguna played five difficult games May 1 and the final May 2. Laguna played against club teams from Chino Hills, San Diego Shores, Commerce and SET. According to the players, the most challenging teams were Commerce, San Diego Shores and SET. After Laguna won the gold medal game, 5-4, over San Diego Shores, Coach Chad Beeler was pushed into the pool along with all the players that had played in the tournament.

Two city records were broken as Laguna Beach held its annual youth track meet April 4. In the boys? Division 2 (athletes born in 2001), Koa Todd set the record in the 100 meters with a mark of 15.9 seconds. He broke Aaron Chesley?s city mark of 16.7, which was set in 1985. Marlee Grosher also set a record in the 1,600 meters for the girls? Division 7 (born in 1996), finishing in 6 minutes, 30.75 seconds. That bettered the old time of 6:49.90, set by current Laguna Beach High cross country standout Gerry Artman in 2004.
