The Laguna Beach Planning Commission is holding a public workshop at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the results of the downtown walking tour conducted on Jan. 12, according to a city press release. The Planning Commission has conducted community workshops to consider a potential amendment to the Downtown Specific Plan and wants public input on how to improve the downtown area. The Downtown Specific Plan includes policies and guidelines to preserve and enhance the village character of the downtown, according to the news release.

Laguna Beach High School's PTA is looking for artists and crafters to participate in this year's annual Holiday Boutique on Dec. 7 in the Dugger Gym. Organizers expect five hours of foot traffic at the free-admission boutique. Performances by the elementary schools' Honors Chorus, the High School Jazz Band and other musical groups are planned. A silent auction will also be held. Each vendor keeps all of the proceeds beyond the table rental fee of $65. Neighbors The International Quilt Assn. has announced that Barbara Woodruff of Laguna Beach is a finalist in the group's annual judged show, Quilts: A World of Beauty. Her work, Journey, was recognized in the Art, Large category. Winners will be named Oct. 29 during the Winner's Circle Celebration in Houston.... Josh D. Shapiro was named to the dean's list of academic achievement in the spring semester at Washington University College of Arts & Sciences in St. Louis.

Sammy's gets honor for service Local business winners were announced, and Sammy's Burgers won top honors as Laguna Beach High School's Dignity, Appreciation, Respect for Treating Students committee award was announced at a recent Board of Education meeting. DARTS is a high school committee with two student representatives from each class. Also serving on the committee is Supt. Theresa Daem, Executive Assistant to the Supt. Darrin Reed and ASB President Jake Wheeler.

Kubisak-Smith Thomas and Debra Kubisak of Laguna Beach have announced the engagement of their daughter Valerie Jeanne, a 2000 graduate of Laguna Beach High School, to Brandon Delwyn Smith. Smith is the son of Delwyn and Rochelle Smith of Oroville, Calif. In May Kubisak will graduate from Vanguard University with a degree in mathematics. After graduation she will continue her education to earn a teaching credential and master's degree in English.

The Laguna Beach High School classes of 2003 and 2004 will hold a holiday fund-raiser for the annual Safe and Sane Grad Night. The event keeps exuberant seniors off the streets and out of trouble, said Jane Schnyder, co-chair of the event. "Grad night can be a real dangerous night," she said. "The party keeps them in one spot until they're driven home the next morning." The holiday fund-raiser features fresh wreaths, garlands and Christmas tree centerpieces from Washington State, as well as fudge.

Boutique set for computer programs The Laguna Beach High School computer department will have its second annual boutique to raise money for the computer programs. The boutique will take place from 11 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the high school's main quad area. College Round-Up at high school Laguna Beach High School will hold its 30th annual College Round-Up from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the North Gym. There will be two information sessions prior to the event: College Information for junior parents from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 81, and a Financial Aid workshop for senior parents from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 65. The general public is welcome at all events.

Erika Dial and Jennifer Kucera of Laguna Beach shared honors at a recent Girl Scout Ceremony. Each girl has earned the highest achievement possible for their level of Girl Scouting. Dial, who will be going into ninth grade at Laguna Beach High School next year, earned the Cadette Girl Scout Silver Award. To earn this award a girl must fulfill specific prerequisites, including completing badges, career investigation and excercises in self-awareness. Kucera has been awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and the equivalent of the Eagle Award in Boy Scouts.

No Square Theatre in Laguna Beach is slated to kick off the year with "Broadway Bombs Away" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Founding board member Saif Eddin is the concert's director, while Los Angeles-based Rufino Cabang is its narrator. The 14-person cast includes Laguna Beach High School juniors Bailey Jaeger and Brooke Borges, Arts Commissioner Pat Kollenda and artist Ron Dier. Tunes such as "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "I'll Be Seeing You" will be performed. The production takes place in the historic Legion Hall, 384 Legion St., and free parking is available at nearby Laguna Beach High School.
