Laguna Beach High coaching vacancies The Laguna Beach High athletic departing is still conducting a search to fill four coaching positions. The school has coaching vacancies for varsity and junior varsity softball, boys' junior varsity tennis and frosh/soph boys' volleyball. The positions are open immediately. The Laguna Beach High football staff is conducting football skill workouts on Sundays this spring. The workouts will cover the skills necessary to play receiver, running back, quarterback and defensive backfield. Participants will also be familiar with the offensive and defensive terms and techniques used by the Laguna Beach football program. There are two programs, one for incoming fourth and fifth-graders and one for incoming sixth through eighth-graders. Both start April 5 and are from 3-4:30 p.m. at Laguna Beach High.

Marissa Greenough, a member of the Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball team, committed to Erskine College, the school announced Tuesday. The Division II school is located in Due West, S.C., and is a member of the Conference Carolinas. Greenough, a senior outside hitter/opposite, took her official recruiting visit to Erskine in November. Jaffe, Quirarte, Raffo earn all-star nominations Laguna Beach High seniors Alec Jaffe, Ethan Quirarte and Ryan Raffo all were nominated for the South team of the 51st annual Brea Lions Orange County all-star football game. Roster selections will be announced later this month. The game is July 16 at Orange Coast College. Jaffe (a running back and defensive back), Quirarte (tight end/linebacker) and Raffo (lineman) helped Laguna win the Orange Coast League title this past season.

When "Damn Yankees" takes its first swings at Laguna Beach High School's Artists Theater this weekend, it'll be a homecoming of sorts for a number of musical theater performers who graduated from Laguna Beach High over the past decade. The Gallimaufry Performing Arts rendition of the musical fantasy will be staged for two weekends and only six performances under the direction of Steve Josephson, artistic director of the Laguna company, and choreographer Andrew Ruesch. The show imagines what might happen if the Washington Senators (this being the 1950s)

A Laguna Beach High summer cross-country training camp for returning players and incoming freshmen gets underway Monday. The camp, which offers training for the fall CIF Southern Section season, runs through Aug. 29. Coach Dave Brobeck said a runner?s commitment to attending the camp practices will have a ?direct impact? on how well a runner does in upcoming races. He said he will make all practices ?fun and productive.? Practices start at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 29. Each Monday and Wednesday practice session will take place at El Morro School, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Laguna Beach High track and Fridays at Alta Laguna Park.

Laguna Beach High girls' soccer coach Bill Rolfing and his staff will conduct a summer soccer camp for girls 12 to 18 for the second straight year. Soccer skills and technique development, small-group tactics and field awareness will be emphasized. Special "speed training" sessions with Jimmy Nolan, head football coach at Laguna Beach High, will add to the program's depth in an energetic, fun and positive learning environment. Two camp sessions will be offered.

Designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, Laguna Beach High School Volleyball Summer Camp starts with its first weekly session Monday. The camp runs between 4 to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday. The freshman-senior camps also are offered the weeks of Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22. The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys' volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.
