Laguna Beach High seniors Dana Hutchinson and Pierre Masson have been named the school?s Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively, for 2007-08. The two were selected by the school?s athletic boosters, Athletic Director Mike Churchill said. Hutchinson was a powerful force on the girls? volleyball team that won a second straight CIF Southern Section championship last fall. The University of Arizona-bound athlete concluded her prep career in late May by being selected as the girls?

Laguna Beach High seeks frosh/soph coach Laguna Beach High has an open coaching position available for its frosh/soph girls' volleyball team. The girls volleyball regular season begins in September. Runner honored at college level Former Laguna Beach High cross-country standout Max Mullender, , a 2006 graduate of Laguna Beach, has been awarded the title of California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Freshman of the Year after he helped guide UC San Diego to a third-place finish at the conference men's cross-country final at the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla. Mullender, an all-CIF and league champion during his career at Laguna Beach High, finished sixth, overall, with a time of 26.28.

With the 2004 Little League season just six weeks away, Laguna Beach has announced that its Opening Day celebration will take place Feb. 28. The festivities will be held at the league's Riddle Field and will begin with an All-American Pancake Breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children and all players dressed in their team uniform eat at no cost. The Opening Day ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. with an All-Team Parade around Riddle Field.

Local youth and high school-aged players will have the opportunity to develop their game during upcoming summer football camps staged under the direction of Laguna Beach High football Coach Jonathan Todd and his staff. All camps will be held at Guyer Field on the Laguna Beach High campus. Youth Football Skills Camps are two no-contact camps designed to teach players blocking and tackling, as well as offensive, defensive and special teams position skills. Each day?s camp will culminate with no-contact flag football scrimmages.

-- Michael Sciacca Four high school athletes will be representing the city of Laguna Beach this week at the 23rd annual Boys Volleyball Junior Olympics held in Louisville, Ky. Each a member of the Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball program, the local foursome is comprised of Matt Anderson, Nick Aronoff and brothers Trey and Andrew Chapel. Anderson, Aronoff and Trey Chapel will be playing in the 28-team, 17 Open Division. Andrew Chapel will be playing in the 15 Club Division.
