For Laguna Beach High football Coach Corey Brown, Friday's season opener can't come soon enough. Not only is he ready to see what his 2013 Breakers have to offer, he's also excited to begin his first year, and first game, in charge of the program. "I feel like it's my senior year, and I'm about to play that first game of the season," he said. "I've been looking forward to this game all week. " "This game," is Laguna's opening night contest, which will come at home against Bolsa Grande.

Makenzie Fischer was a bit jet-lagged late Tuesday afternoon but still, you could color her mood golden. The Laguna Beach High student-athlete, who begins her junior year next week, had just returned a day earlier from Volos, Greece, site of the 2013 FINA Women's Junior World Championships. Fischer and the USA Water Polo Women's Junior National Team were sitting on top of the world following the week-long tournament. Team USA captured the gold medal Sunday by defeating Spain, 9-7, in the tournament's championship game.

Raul Papaleo knows all about the storied tradition of the Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball program. The players, the league titles, the CIF Southern Section championships. This year, he's adding his name to that tradition. Papaleo is about to begin his initial year as head coach of the girls' program when on Sept. 3, the Breakers open their 2013 campaign on the road at JSerra. He took over the program reins last March, after Lance Stewart resigned as head coach in December.

Laguna Beach lifeguards are putting their skills to the test once again this week at the Nautica United States Lifesaving Assn. National Lifeguard Championships at Manhattan Beach. More than 1,000 lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards were expected to compete in team and individual ocean and beach course events. The Lifeguard National Championships run daily starting at 8 a.m. through Saturday. The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Assn. has won the title 39 times in the 43-year history of the event including the last 26 national competitions.

Preston GrandPre has committed to becoming a California Golden Bear. The senior-to-be at Laguna Beach High, a shortstop on the Breakers' baseball team, committed July 30 to play baseball for the Cal program. GrandPre, who also was in the sights of several other Division 1 programs, said he will sign with the Bears when the National Letter of Intent early signing period starts Nov. 13. "I really had planned on committing during the summer before my senior year," GrandPre said.

Eleven members of the Laguna Beach High girls' water polo program played key roles for two SET (Saddleback-El Toro) Water Polo Club teams that won gold and bronze medals Sunday at the 44th annual USA Junior Olympics. The SET 16U girls' team, coached by Ethan Damato, head coach of the boys' and girls' water polo teams at Laguna Beach High, claimed gold in the 16U girls' Championship division but had to climb back from a quarterfinal-round loss to take the title. SET dropped a 9-8 quarterfinal game to Commerce and had to win its next game, in order to reach the semifinals.

The Laguna Beach High baseball team closed out its eight-game summer season Wednesday with a matchup against Santa Ana Century. The Breakers dropped a 2-0 game to the host Centurions. Laguna started the week with a game Monday at Tustin and lost, 6-3, to the Tillers. The Breakers began their summer game schedule July 8. The schedule included two games against both Ocean View and Beckman and one game against both Woodbridge and Segerstrom. "Our pitching improved over the summer but we still need to get some serious work in the batting cage and improve our hitting," Laguna Coach Mike Bair said.

Designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, Laguna Beach High School Volleyball Summer Camp starts with its first weekly session Monday. The camp runs between 4 to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday. The freshman-senior camps also are offered the weeks of Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22. The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys' volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.

Makenzie Fischer, who will enter her junior year at Laguna Beach High next month, has been selected to the USA Water Polo Junior Women's National Team roster for the upcoming FINA Women's Junior World Championships. Fischer, a utility player, is the only high school player on the team. The Junior Women's team, coached by Dan Klatt, will compete Aug. 19-25 at Volos, Greece and opens tournament play against Kazakhstan Aug. 19. Former Laguna Beach standout Nolan McConnell, now at Long Beach State, was named to the USA Water Polo Junior Men's National Team roster for the FINA Men's Junior World Championships at Szombathely, Hungary, Aug. 12-18.

Corey Brown is excited about the prospects for his first Laguna Beach High football team. Summer football arrived at Guyer Field last week and the Breakers already have competed in two passing tournaments starting with a seven-on-seven tournament July 11 at JSerra. Irvine High, followed Wednesday with a tournament at Irvine High. Brown, in his first year as head coach of the Breakers, was glad to have the summer session arrive. "Finally," he said. "We have been preparing for summer camp and fall camp since the first week of January, beginning with strength and conditioning.
