Opponents have called a proposed 30-unit artist live-work project in Laguna Canyon many things in recent months: an encroachment on a neighborhood, a development too big for the site and a money-making operation. After Wednesday night's Planning Commission vote on the matter, an additional term can be added: approved. Commissioners, reflecting the dynamic of a community divided on the project, voted 3 to 2 for sculptor Louis Longi's project at 20412 and 20432 Laguna Canyon Road.

An attorney for the family of one of two men killed in a head-on collision on Laguna Canyon Road has sued a driver who survived the wreck, a witness and multiple cities and public agencies. Attorney Otto Haselhoff, who represents the family of Alberto Casique, levels allegations ranging from driver negligence to poor road maintenance in his Jan. 21 Orange County Superior Court lawsuit. Among the defendants is Robert McFarland Pettis, 48, a Laguna Beach physician whose Tesla Model S sedan collided with the Honda Accord sedan driven by Casique, 47, at 6:45 a.m. April 2. Armando Gonzalez, 38, a passenger in Casique's Honda, also died.

It's been nearly a year since the vibrant Laguna College of Art & Design mural along Laguna Canyon Road was painted gray by the building's tenant. Since then, LCAD mural instructor Mia Tavanotti has been hard at work, brainstorming and creating the Power of Words Project , which allowed residents to vote on a word that would inspire a new mural. On Saturday, Tavanotti stood alongside students, Mayor Jane Egly and State Sen. Curren Price (D-Los Angeles) during a ribbon-cutting ceremony that revealed the winning word: "wonder.

An accident today at 3:46 p.m. in the 700 block of Laguna Canyon Road has resulted in a Sig-Alert in which all lanes of the highway were ordered closed for half an hour, Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Jason Kravetz said. “At 3:46 pm, we began receiving 911 calls reporting an injury traffic accident in the 700 block of Laguna Canyon Road, in-bound lanes,” Kravetz said. “It appears that a vehicle hit a bicyclist. We have called for two ambulances. There are at least ten different police staff out at the crash and four fire engines.

Broadway paving done Caltrans has completed the repaving of Broadway, and striping of the roadway was accomplished early this week. On Monday, crews cut into some of the repaved areas in which sewer manholes were covered up, said Steve May of the Laguna Beach Public Works Dept. The manholes will have to be adjusted to the new height of the paving. Other traffic projects Construction of a pedestrian crossing at the Festival of Arts on Laguna Canyon Road is expected to be completed by the end of February, May said.

The Pageant of the Masters held its annual casting call over a very soggy weekend, Jan. 8 and 9, for this summer's show, "On the Road -- A Crash Course in Art and Popular Culture." Despite the inclement weather and closing of Laguna Canyon Road at times, 750 people attended. For those not able to attend the casting call that would like to volunteer, call (949) 494-3663 to set up an appointment. This year an exceptionally large cast is needed, as well as volunteers for makeup artists, wardrobe, headdress and other backstage positions.

Laguna Canyon Conservancy to hold dinner meeting The Laguna Canyon Conservancy will host its dinner meeting at Tivoli Terrace on Monday. The meeting will allow attendees to meet Mayor Toni Iseman and find out what's happening in Laguna Canyon. They will discuss the groundbreaking ceremony for the Laguna Canyon Road construction project on Jan. 7. The no-host bar will open at 6 p.m., buffet dinner is at 6:45 p.m. and the program follows. Tivoli Terrace is on the Festival grounds on Laguna Canyon Road.
