The Laguna Beach Little League Major Division All-Star team is moving on in the District 55 All-Star Tournament. Laguna has played three games since Saturday, has won two straight and posted a 2-1 record. It's latest game Tuesday resulted in a 10-1 victory over Rancho Niguel at Woodfield Park in Aliso Viejo that kept the team alive in the double-elimination tournament. Laguna Beach will attempt to again fend off elimination when it takes on Laguna Niguel at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Woodfield Park (Field 4)

Cynthia "Cindy" Frazier, who served as city editor of the Coastline Pilot for nearly eight years, has died. She was 60. Cindy had been battling pancreatic cancer for the last year. She succumbed to her illness Wednesday morning at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. After working at community newspapers in the Santa Monica area, Cindy joined the Coastline Pilot in January 2005 as city editor, quickly immersing herself in the community. She placed a strong emphasis on City Hall and arts coverage, and also wrote quirky columns about everything from taking art classes to her small roles on the community theater stage.

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team is gearing up for a big weekend. The Breakers are one of 32 teams competing at the Foothill Volleyball Classic, which starts Friday. The two-day event concludes with championship-round action. Matches will be played at Foothill, Tustin, Beckman and Canyon/Anaheim. Laguna is the No. 1-seed in Pool 1, which also includes Beckman, Mission Viejo and St. Bernard. The other top pool seeds are Los Alamitos (Pool 2), Dana Hills (Pool 3), Orange Lutheran (Pool 4)

The Laguna Beach 14-and-Under girls' water polo team won the gold medal and the Laguna 12U girls won silver at the Winterfest tournament last weekend. Sixteen teams played for the 14U title and 12 teams vied for the 12U crown. Laguna's 14U team opened tourney play against traditional power SoCal of Tustin and scored an 11-3 victory. Next came a 19-5 win over Chino Hills Area Water Polo (CHAWP) and was followed by a 12-7 win over Corona del Mar (CDM) that put Laguna in the semifinals.

The Laguna Beach girls' Division 2 (grade 5/6) team improved to 5-1 following a 39-17 victory over El Toro in National Junior Basketball action Saturday at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach. Isabel Mansour and Taylor Glenn led the Laguna defense, which had to contend with a taller El Toro team. Sophia Lucas led the offense with 14 points and Molly Cohn, Quinn Winter and Mia Pitz all scored four points. Laguna travels to Aliso Niguel High on Saturday to take on Aliso Niguel at 8 a.m. * Girls' Division 1 Laguna Beach suffered its first loss of the season in a 23-21 setback to Capo Dana.

The Laguna Beach girls' fifth/sixth grade team ran its record to 4-1 Saturday and got back on the winning track by defeating Capo Dana, 26-14, in National Junior Basketball action at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach. Laguna earned the win after pulling away from an 11-10 halftime lead. Its defensive effort, sparked by Molly Cohn, allowed Capo Valley just four second-half points. Laguna was led in scoring by Sophia Lucas with 17 points and Taylor Glenn scored five points.

The Laguna Beach boys' basketball team was one of 10 teams to participate Wednesday on the opening day of the two-day Orange County North/South Challenge at El Toro High. Playing the first of an 11-game event, the Breakers were outscored by La Habra, 15-3, in the fourth quarter, and were handed a 48-44 defeat by the Highlanders. The Breakers took a 22-18 halftime lead and extended their lead to 41-33 after three quarters. "That's five games in a row now where we've had the lead, and lost," Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said.

The Laguna Beach girls' fifth/sixth grade National Junior Basketball team continued its winning ways Saturday by running past Laguna Hills, 29-4, at Laguna Hills. The Laguna Beach boys' 5/6 team dropped a close game to Laguna Hills (UCLA), losing, 32-30, and also fell, 51-23, to the Laguna Beach No. 1 team. The Laguna Beach girls took command from the start and won with ease. Isabel Mansour led the scoring with nine points. Sophia Lucas scored eight points and Evie Laptin and Quinn Winter added six and three points, respectively.

The Laguna Beach boys' soccer team hasn't played in a week and on Friday, the Breakers return to action to face Aliso Niguel on the Wolverine's home field. The nonleague match starts at 5 p.m. and is preceded at 3:15 p.m. by the junior varsity and frosh/soph games between the schools. Laguna last played Dec. 9 when the Breakers battled Tesoro to a 1-1 tie. Freshman Harrison Gregory scored the Breakers' goal. "This game was always going to be a really good test for the team," Laguna Coach Daniel Richards said.
