The RVs line up like big aluminum cigars, filling the breeze with the smell of baby back ribs, jumbo shrimp and baked beans. Kids ride scooters while dads pitch tents and moms straighten plastic sheets over picnic tables. Behind it all, instead of a canopy of oaks or pines, is the eternal Pacific horizon. It's summer camping at El Moro Campgrounds in Crystal Cove, the state's shiny new addition that already has become as popular as, well, Laguna Beach. The interesting thing is most of the people who camp there are local.

Laguna held a 5-4 lead heading into the top of fifth inning against Rancho Niguel, but was outscored, 5-1, over the final two innings and was saddled with a 9-6 loss in an elimination game. Rancho Niguel scored six runs on seven errors to move on to another elimination game Friday against either undefeated Laguna Hills or once-beaten Central Irvine.

Laguna Beach Little League sent five teams into the 2011 Little League District 55 All-Star Tournament and as of Thursday, only two of those teams remained in title contention. The tournament took a break for the Fourth of July weekend and resumes Tuesday. Majors Laguna Beach opened tournament play Saturday with a 7-3 win over Lake Forest. On Sunday, the outcome wasn't as kind to the locals, who lost a tough 3-2 game to Central Irvine. Laguna played Newport Beach American on Thursday in an elimination game.

While everyone else in Laguna was bathing in sunshine Sunday, I spent eight hours in a windowless room doing penance for getting my first moving violation. In order to have the violation expunged from a heretofore pristine driving record, I was attending the Comedy Traffic School. It wasn't funny. Traffic school is one of the options offered if a driver gets a moving violation. You can fight the ticket in court, pay the fine or pay the fine and go to traffic school. Going to court was out of the question.

The Laguna Beach girls' soccer team had only one game scheduled this week before it was to take off for the desert two days after Christmas. But a tune-up for the Breakers' upcoming trip never materialized as rainy conditions forced the cancellation of Monday's nonleague game with University, Laguna Coach Bill Rolfing said. The Breakers last played Dec. 16 against Laguna Hills. They hung tough and stayed with last year's Division 2 quarterfinalists, but the Hawks used a last-minute goal to secure a 2-0 nonleague victory.
