Katie and Brandon Ferguson sold everything they had to travel in Central and South America for most of 2012, keeping open the possibility that they might move out of the United States. The couple traveled to Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Costa Rica, backpacking, surfing, staying in hostels and thinking about what they wanted to do with their lives. Brandon, an experienced barber, took along shears, a couple of combs and a straight razor in the hope of making a little money if someone staying at a hostel needed a haircut.

The 2013 Little League season certainly was one to remember for Laguna Beach. Following an unparalleled, two division championships performance last month for Laguna Beach at the District 55 Tournament of Champions, two of the league's All-Star teams, the 11-year-old and 9/10 teams, played to the final weekend of the district's All-Star tournament. Both teams came up just shy of winning district titles with the 9/10 team playing for a division championship on Sunday. The 11-year-old All-Stars lost a semifinal game to eventual division champion Aliso Viejo also on Sunday.

Through the first five days of the 2013 Little League District 55 All-Star Tournament, three Laguna Beach teams were still in contention for division championships. The teams, the 11-year-old, 9/10 and 8/9 Superstar All-Stars, each have one loss in the double-elimination event, but can win district titles by winning out the remainder of the tournament. * Little League All-Stars Laguna was eliminated from the tournament after dropping its first two games. Laguna fell, 10-0, to Laguna Niguel in an opener on Saturday, and on Sunday had its postseason come to an end in a 16-7 loss to Rancho Niguel.

Laguna Beach Little League, still basking in the glowing aftermath of winning two division championships for the first time at the District 55 Tournament of Champions, heads into the final stage of district play: the All-Star Tournament. Four Laguna teams, Little League, 10-11-year-old, 9/10, and 8/9 Superstars, will send teams into All-Star play. The league's Junior All-Star team will not compete in the district tournament. Opening game schedules for Laguna teams are as follows: Little League All-Stars: vs. Laguna Niguel, 9 a.m., Saturday, Woodfield Park (Field 4)

VFW and Crescent Bay Advisors have parlayed their success from Laguna Beach Little League postseason play into hot starts in the 2013 Little League District 55 Tournament of Champions. Both VFW (Majors) and CBA (AAA, Minor) won their first two games in the week-long, single-elimination tournament, and each will play a division semifinal game on Friday. Three other Laguna Beach Little League teams, Hobie (Majors), Gapp Construction (AAA, Minor) and Wells Fargo Advisors (Junior)

The Orange County District Attorney is seeking the public's help in identifying more possible victims of a Laguna Niguel man who allegedly raped two women, including one from Laguna Beach, according to a news release. Babak "Bobby" Azadgilani, 26, was arraigned Wednesday at Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach and is being held on $2 million bail, the D.A. said. Azadgilani is charged with two felony counts of forcible rape, two felony counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object by force, and one felony count each of sodomy by force and forcible oral copulation, according to the release.

A man suspected of raping a Laguna Beach woman turned himself in Friday after police sought the public's help. Babak "Bobby," Azadgilani, 26, of Laguna Niguel, turned himself in at 5:30 p.m. at the Laguna Beach Police Department and was booked on a $100,000 warrant for rape, Capt. Jason Kravetz wrote in an email. Azadgilani is suspected of assaulting the woman in her home on April 21, according to police. The victim contacted police after the alleged assault. Police said Azadgilani fled on his BMW motorcycle before officers arrived.

Laguna Canyon Foundation and Orange County Parks will have hawks, owls and falcons on exhibit as part of their "Under the Sycamores - Amazing Raptors" event from 1 to 4 p.m. May 11 at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Two separate bird hikes will be held at 1 and 3 p.m., and participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. The Orange County Bird of Prey Center will host a 2 p.m. program with hawks, owls and falcons onsite. There is no charge for the event, but parking costs $3. Signups are required.

It's the little things that tend to make the difference. Just ask the Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team which has turned its concentration to the minute areas of its game plan. Aware that they are moving toward a possible Orange Coast League championship, the Breakers took care of league business Tuesday by scoring a 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 sweep at Saddleback. The win over the Roadrunners (2-4 in league) started the second half of the league schedule for the Breakers, who upped their league mark to 6-0. Middle blocker Maxx McCarter had eight kills, outside hitter Weston Barnes had eight kills, libero Jake Hexberg had six kills and 14 digs, and setter Grifan Fair had 23 assists.

Man yells, spits at officer Laguna Beach Police charged a man with assault after he yelled obscenities and flipped off an officer at a traffic stop Saturday, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email. Police arrested Laguna Beach resident Eli Grossman, 60, after responding to a call at 9:52 a.m. in the 1000 block of Glenneyre Street, Callus said. Grossman drove up to the officer and began yelling, according to the report. The officer reportedly turned to get away and Grossman followed him. The officer parked his car and Grossman came to the officer's door and continued yelling obscenities, Callus said.
