Well folks, the Surfing Soapbox is doing just that — going surfing for a couple of weeks. First stop is Lima, Peru, where my sponsor Lost Clothing and Surfboards will be premiering my TV show that aired on Super Bowl Sunday, titled “My Firsthand” on Fuel TV. “‘My Firsthand’ is an award-winning documentary based on the lives of action sports greatest heroes.” It was the absolute greatest moment of my surfing career and an honor to have such an opportunity.

Laguna Beach resident Whitney Pavlik and partner Stacy Rouwenhorst finished tied for ninth over the weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour Riverside Open. Pavlik and Rouwenhorst, seeded No. 14, won their first winner?s bracket match against No. 19 Gabriela Roney and Lenka Urbanova, 21-17, 21-15. But the duo then lost in the next round to No. 3-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-19, 20-22, 15-11. Pavlik and Rouwenhorst then won a pair of three-game contender?

Artist and designer Isamu Noguchi was a busy man in the early 1980s. Born in Los Angeles in 1904, he had won a Guggenheim award as a young man, catapulting him into the arts stratosphere. He spent many years working in Japan and Europe, ascending to the rank of an international artist. Noguchi was part of the early modernist and environmental movements, having worked as an assistant to famed modernist Constantin Brancusi in Paris, and was also a close friend of American visionary Buckminster Fuller, who created the geodesic dome.

Burbank City Councilwoman Stacey Murphy will be arraigned Thursday in Pasadena Superior Court after being charged Tuesday with one count of possessing a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of child endangerment. Murphy, 47, is free on $100,000 bail after being arrested July 13, after police found cocaine, three handguns and 900 rounds of ammunition in her home on Lima Street in Burbank, where the mother of three lives with her 12-year-old son. The handguns were registered to her boyfriend, Glendale resident Scott Schaffer, who is in federal custody awaiting an Aug. 30 trial.

Glendale resident Scott Schaffer is in a court-ordered drug treatment facility after posting $1-million bond to be released from federal custody on charges of selling handguns to a gang member. Schaffer's family put up the money that will assure that he will continue to make his court appearances, one of his attorney's, Steven L. Szocs, said on Monday. Schaffer was released Aug. 19 after more than a month in federal custody following his arrest at his Glendale home.
