Suzie Harrison El Morro Elementary School fifth grade students made visiting the country's 50 states easy -- without the requirement of airfare -- at the school's annual State Fair April 8. Fifth grade publicity coordinator Macklin Thornton, 11, took pictures and reported on the event. "At the beginning of the State Fair, all of the students sang 'Fifty Nifty United States,' 'America the Beautiful,' and 'God Bless the USA,'" Macklin said. "Then the students invited the parents and visitors to look at the amazing posters that the students made and have a souvenir or a product from that particular state."

SchoolPower fundraiser gala is set SchoolPower's "Laguna, An Evening Celebrating Laguna's Artists and Schools" auction and dinner dance will be Saturday at the Montage. The dinner dance will showcase local artists and merchants. Auction items will include local art, travel and wine among other items to bid on. The event is black-tie optional. Because this year's Community Campaign was so successful, most tickets are already reserved, but some are still available.

Thurston presents ?Once on This Island? Thurston Middle School?s Junior Park Avenue Players will perform ?Once on This Island,? the musical inspired by ?The Little Mermaid,? through next week at Thurston?s Black Box Theater. The play is filled with song and dance, and stresses the importance of tolerance and understanding between social and cultural divisions. ?This show has brought out the best in our kids,? said teacher Mark Dressler. ?They?ve been working hard, really stretching themselves with the play?

Patriots Day Parade needs vets Patriots Day Parade organizers are seeking local Vietnam War veterans to walk in the March 6 parade. Vietnam vets have participated in the parade since 1985. Veterans are encouraged to wear old uniforms. The group will meet the day of the parade between 9 and 10 a.m. at Laguna Beach High School, at 625 Park Ave. The parade will start at 11 a.m. After the parade, a get-together will be held at the Marine Room, near the corner of South Coast Highway and Ocean Avenue.

The Laguna Art Museum is borrowing from the tradition of Carnival in Venice to celebrate its 85th anniversary. The Masquerade Ball will be held May 17 at the museum. "The spring events change every year, one year we had a lingerie fashion show, casino night and one event was the re-creation of the Casa Blanca film," museum director Bolton Colburn said. "There's quite a history, and this year with the costume theme, we've really been gearing up." Local musician John Heussenstamm will be perform while guests dine and dance.

The Laguna store will close at the end of the year. All of Cruciano's collections are made of fine European and Asian fabrics, and she hand-picks Italian shoes and accessories to compliment her designs. Peppertree Lane's Bourbon Street Bash netted $22,000 for the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. The whole lane was blocked off for the Sept. 29 fundraiser. "We still have more money coming in, and Peppertree Lane will match whatever the total is," said Katy Moss, property manager of the lane. Philo and Diane Smith own the lane, one of the city's most picturesque thoroughfares. Diane Smith did the floral decorations for the fundraiser. The event was the idea of Partners Bistro proprietor Rick Sadleir, who spent three days preparing a lavish buffet of French Quarter-inspired cuisine.
