Bent to lead physicians? academy Dr. Tom Bent, medical director and chief executive of the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, has been named president of the 7,000-member California Academy of Family Physicians, according to a news statement. His term began April 17. Bent is an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UC Irvine and serves on the Academy?s Committee on Continuing Professional Development. Bent said he believes the time is right for health-care reform.

The Laguna Beach City Council is accepting applications from residents willing to serve on a new senior housing task force. The panel will be asked to advise the Planning Commission by Dec. 30 on what the city can do to keep the elderly in their homes or provide them with assisted-living options. Under consideration are residential-care homes, congregate care facilities — which involve some communal features — assisted-living facilities and extended-care facilities. Housing-related services could include non-medical home assistance and home healthcare.

The timing was right for the annual Leadership Luncheon presented Jan. 15 at the Hotel Laguna by the Chamber of Commerce. Luncheon founder Bobbi Cox kept the reports of 2008 achievements and 2009 goals on track with her non-negotiable timer. “I am ruthless,” Cox warned the representatives of civic groups and businesses at the luncheon. Participants were given one minute to share their accomplishments last year and ambitions for this year. Cox, a Realtor and philanthropist, said her goal for 2009 is to lighten up and become less encumbered.
