Remember “Menopause, the Musical,” which tickled Laguna Playhouse audiences a few years ago? Well, if you missed it then, you can catch it now. “Now” means right now — the reprise production opened last weekend and will be running through Sept. 27 in what is termed a “special performance” by the “Menopause the Musical” production company and not part of the playhouse’s regular schedule. The show is set in a department store, where four women of a certain age meet “by chance” at a lingerie sale.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's 2007 fire risk severity map designates much of Laguna Beach's surrounding open space as very high risk. The recently proposed fire hazard maps define fire hazards in areas the state is responsible for protecting, which includes much of the park and preserve space around Laguna. The maps were open for public comment online through Aug. 1. Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ruben Grijalva is scheduled to approve the designations or submit them to be reworked.

This is the second of two articles updating women of all ages on the use of hormones. * I had to bite my tongue while sitting at Zinc Cafe & Market in Laguna Beach (one of my favorite places) the other day. Two beautiful young women who looked to be in their early twenties sat across from me, both with bad acne, which can leave permanent scars. I doubted they could be using birth control hormones, now available as pills or via a nifty vaginal ring. In addition to reliable contraception, use of these hormones is a great strategy for clearing up skin problems and smoothing out a myriad of other hormonal challenges in women, paving the way for an easier menopausal transition.

Whoever said there are few roles available for women of a certain age should check out the exhilarating summer production at the Laguna Playhouse. "Menopause, the Musical" not only involves ladies in the midst of "the change," but celebrates them. It's a high-flying, high-kicking and high-temperature tribute to women in the throes of hot flashes, energy shortage, memory loss and other such rewards awaiting those females who survive past life's half-century mark. Creator Jeanie Linders took a page from the "Forbidden Broadway" book in fashioning "Menopause."

This is the first of a two-part series updating women of all ages on the use of hormones. It is a pleasure to be back putting pencil to paper with good news for women going through "the change. " A Global Consensus Statement, hot off the press in the April issue of the journal Climacteric, concludes that the benefits of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) outweigh the risks when started before the age of 60, or within 10 years of menopause. An impressive array of experts from all over the world met in Paris last November, coauthoring the statement on behalf of the International Menopause Society (IMS)
