Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis came to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. with a mission, wanting to secure two podium finishes at the Formula BMW Americas Championships Rounds 10, 11 and 12. Mission accomplished. Lewis finished third in Rounds 11 and 12 on Sunday. As a result, he climbed within one point of the Rookie Championship and created a nine-point lead over the third-place rookie contender. Lewis had arrived at the track in second place, with a 23-point deficit.

Four Laguna Beach High teams are ranked in this week's CIF Southern Section polls. The Laguna girls' volleyball team, which started play Thursday, holds down the No. 1-ranking in Division 1-A. The football team, which begins its season Friday at Bolsa Grande, is ranked fourth in the Southern Division. The boys' water polo team, the two-time defending Division 3 champion, has moved up to Division 2 and is ranked fourth. The Breakers start their season Sept. 7 at eighth-ranked Villa Park.

Volleyball tournament starts Saturday The Laguna Beach Fall Classic volleyball tournament will hit main beach beginning Saturday. “A” Division play for both men and women is Saturday, with “B” Division play Sunday. Cost is $25 and the tournament is sponsored by Laguna Beach. Sign up individually on the day of the tournament at 8 a.m. There will also be a players’ party at Hennessey’s Tavern Saturday afternoon after play completes.

After recently being crowned the 2009 Formula BMW Americas Rookie Driver champion, Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis has been invited to make a guest driving appearance for the Eurointernational team at the Singapore Formula BMW Pacific event that will be held in conjunction with the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix Sept. 25-27. ?The Singapore F1 Grand Prix will be a unique experience for Michael and a great reward for his rookie championship in Formula BMW Americas,? Eurointernational team owner Antonio Ferrari said in a release.

The Firefighters came back from spring break layoff Monday night to rally past Rotary, 5-2, in Laguna Beach Little League Majors Division play at Riddle Field. Down 2-0, the Fire Fighters began their comeback in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Sasaki drew his team even at 2-2 with a hit to right field that scored both Ian Greene and Spencer Freidenrich. The Firefighters grabbed the lead for good in the fourth when Michael Lewis' bunt brought home Adam Seleven.

LAS VEGAS ? Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis hit the jackpot at the three-eighths-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring on Saturday, driving his No. 60 Western Speed Ford Focus Midget to his second USAC California Pavement Ford Focus Series win. Laguna Beach resident Michael Lewis captured the United States Auto Club California Pavement Ford Focus pole position Saturday at the Madera Speedway, driving the No. 60 Western Speed Focus Midget care with a lap of 14.482 seconds. Lewis finished the 25-lap main event in fifth after two on-track incidents, putting him to the back of the pack each time. ?We definitely had the speed, but it was a wild night out there and I just got caught up in a couple of racing incidents,?

Mike Sciacca In a game that was protested earlier this year and resumed for play for the final two innings, American Legion officially recorded a 17-3 win in Majors Division play. Christian Kesler powered a grand slam home run into the outfield trees at Riddle Field to lead American Legion's powerful hitting attack. They scored nine runs in the second inning to go up, 9-0, as Jordan Zraick, Noah Barker, Andrew Paddon each had RBI singles, Will Burk singled twice during the frame and picked up an RBI in the process, Kyle Snyder singled and Michael Porter ripped a two-RBI double.

A team meeting was all it took for the Laguna Beach Soccer Club's boys' under-14 squad to regain its energy. Refocused as it began the second round of play in the Coast Soccer League, Laguna came up with two impressive victories by defeating Corona del Mar, 2-1, and gained a measure of revenge on San Juan United by posting a 3-1 win. In beating Corona del Mar, Laguna jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Alex Germano caused the opposition a great deal of trouble with his strength and speed.
