This corrects an earlier version. The Laguna Beach arts community is shocked and grieving at the sudden death of Lyle Brooks, who collapsed June 18 at a morning production meeting of the Pageant of the Masters. Brooks, 49, died of a massive heart attack, according to his widow, Terry. Brooks was one of the sculptors in the Pageant show, which opens July 8. He was also a noted bon vivant and frequenter of the White House, where his wife works. “I haven’t begun to accept or comprehend the loss of our dear comrade Lyle,” said Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy.

It's never too early to launch a career in the theater, and Laguna Beach area youngsters can get a leg up in show business in a summer program offered by the Laguna Playhouse. A pair of two-week classes are scheduled for children aged 9 to 12 and teenagers in the 13-17 age range at the playhouse's production center in Laguna Hills. Registration deadline is July 1. The youth theater program, "Kids on Broadway," is a musical theater workshop that will feature songs, scenes and monologues from well-known musicals.

“Eat, Drink and Be Merry” is the theme of the 2010 Pageant of the Masters and that’s exactly what the Festival of Arts Board of Directors and their guests did at a reception hosted by the Ritz- Carlton in Dana Point on Sunday. “This event is our way of thanking you, our loyal sponsors, donors and upper level members, for your ongoing support of our organization,” board President Wayne Baglin said. “This is also an opportunity to share updates and good news with you before we release it to the general public.

Lagunans who made New Year’s resolutions to become more well-read will find a plethora of literary feasts at their disposal in coming days, from a visit by a distinguished book reviewer to author events with Mitch Albom and J.A. Jance. The town’s denizens have embraced a sort of literary renaissance, joining together for the “Laguna on the Same Page” program and joining any of several book clubs. Welsh-born reviewer Robert Adams, now a Canadian resident, will review Rohinton Mistry’s novel “A Fine Balance” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 and 11 at the Artists’ Theatre, 625 Park Ave. Tickets are $20 and are available at the door or in advance at Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Ave., (949)
