Baseball team in need of donations Local athletes need donations to buy vital equipment and maintain their playing field. The Laguna Beach High School Baseball Boosters Club is looking for community donations to purchase baseballs to replace those lost throughout the year, and to replace infield dirt. Last year, about two dozen baseballs were lost each week from foul balls and home runs, while 60 tons of dirt was needed. Eating Cracker Jack and singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," players from Laguna Beach Little League were on hand Sunday to honor the late-Jack Norworth, who penned the famous song in 1908. Norworth, a Laguna Beach resident, died 51 years after writing what has become a seventh-inning staple at major league ballparks throughout the country. He was honored with a new monument at his gravesite at Melrose Abbey Memorial Park, located just outside of Angel Stadium. Former Major League pitcher Rollie Fingers delivered remarks during the dedication ceremony.

Festival of Arts accepting applications Artists who would like to apply for the 2009 Festival of Arts should submit a CD with three digital images per media and a completed application form by 4 p.m. Jan. 16. To learn more about the Festival of Arts, the application process and photographing artwork, artists are invited to attend a free seminar from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Forum Theatre on the Festival of Arts grounds. The Festival of Arts accepts applications from artists residing in: Aliso Viejo, Balboa, Balboa Island, Capistrano Beach, Coto de Caza, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Foothill Ranch, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest (El Toro)

Mike Sciacca Tradition sets in on campuses across Orange County this time of year. It's a time when school finals take place, preceding yearbook signing, caps and gowns, commencement speeches and, finally, graduation. It is also a time of year when most schools reveal whom students and staff have selected as tops in the graduating senior class. Laguna Beach High has named its male and female athletes of the year for the 2001-02 school year. Jason Boyd and Martina Speare have been named the recipients of this year's honor.

Rushing, Golubow win singles titles Twelve division championship matches were settled last weekend as the 47th annual City of Laguna Beach Tennis Tournament finals were completed at Alta Vista Park. John Rushing won the Mens 5.0 singles title, and the Women 4.0 winner was Jill Golubow. Team Orange County surfs to another win Team Orange County defeated Team San Diego Sunday in final day showdown of the O'Neill Game Weekend to earn the right to host the National Surf League Championship Weekend.

The Laguna Chapter of the National Charity League honored 22 women who have served a total of 6,165 hours to local philanthropies. Those recognized at the Dec. 21 ball included Laguna Beach residents Sonia Badheka, Ashleigh Barker, Lindsay Butterwick, Breyon Lauher, Jessica Levin, Ashley Maddocks, Martina Speare and Blair Urban. ... The Montage Resort and Spa has named Christopher Coon as its wine director. He will oversee the wine program for the resort's three restaurants and will take charge of the selection, purchasing and storage of wines for the entire resort.

FREDDY SANCHEZ Burbank High; third baseman; Pittsburgh Pirates: Prior to this year, the most games the Burbank High graduate played during a major league season was 20 in 2003 when he was called up to the Boston Red Sox. With limited experience, Sanchez had logged just 41 games in three seasons with the Red Sox and Pirates. So, with that kind of track record, many wondered how the infielder would hold up if he was ever given the opportunity to play as an everyday player.

Four Laguna Beach women — all college freshmen — will be among 18 debs wearing white gowns and muffs as they are presented Saturday at the Ritz Carlton-Dana Point during the Laguna Beach chapter of the National Charity League's Debutante Ball. The National Charity League is a nonprofit, philanthropic mother/daughter organization. The debutants will be honored for their six years of charitable contributions to the community. The Laguna Beach branch is one of five to qualify for a formal ball.
