I received a message the other day from Mark Pitz, father of local surf phenom Taylor Pitz. He asked me if I had any use for some of Taylor's vast collection of surfing trophies now that she is bound for Stanford this coming fall. I happily obliged and told Mark that the trophies would be put to good use as awards to winners of our local surf comps — like the Oak Street Surf Jam, an event Taylor won several years ago. He was stoked at the idea of passing them on to other young surfers.

Eat, pray if you like, love, walk and skateboard. Laguna Beach is more than a "skateboard park. " It is a skateboard heaven. The whole town is up and down, and people have been skateboarding here from the beginning when a skateboard was a piece of wood with a pair of old skates screwed on the front and back. Certainly we need some good ideas in relation to safety on the really steep hills, but a ban will never work. Like one writer said, it's part of our culture and it ain't going away.

If you happened to be on Main Beach Monday watching the four stand-up paddleboarders near the reef, and you happened to watch one of the paddleboarders inadvertently catch a wave and crash into her instructor — well, then you saw me. Carlos Mendizabal and I had signed up for a lesson early Monday morning with the new Stand Up Paddle Company at Coast Highway and Oak Street. We arrived a bit bleary-eyed with our main concern being what to wear. The skies were May-gray overcast, and the water decidedly chilly at 62 degrees.

A plan by the city to place permanent lifeguard towers at more coves and beaches has sunk in rough waters. The California Coastal Commission last week upheld an appeal of the city’s permanent guard tower plan and told city officials that they would have to continue with temporary structures that would be removed during the non-summer season at Picnic, Bird Rock, Sleepy Hollow, Thalia Street and Oak Street beaches. Marine Safety officials said the permanent towers — featuring sun shades and heavy-duty steps — were necessary to fulfill OSHA requirements and keep lifeguards protected from sun and wind while they watched swimmers.
