Through its first five games, it hasn't been difficult for the Laguna Beach High baseball team to score runs, or pick up a victory, against Orange Coast League competition. The defending league champions are now 5-0 in league play, getting that fifth win April 4 by rolling past visiting Costa Mesa, 14-4. The victory, which ended the first round of league play for the Breakers, took Laguna's league win streak to 24 games. Coach Mike Bair called it "just another solid Breaker win. " Laguna, the sixth-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 4, improved to 13-2 overall.

At the halfway point of the Orange Coast League boys' tennis season, Laguna Beach has positioned itself to make a strong run toward repeating as league champion. The Breakers took their OCL record to 4-0 Tuesday by defeating visiting Costa Mesa, 14-4. A clean sweep through doubles action highlighted the win which put the Breakers at 4-0 in league, and 5-5 overall. In doubles, No. 1 Alex Duong/Sterling Dudley-Bowen won their three sets by 6-0 scores. At No. 2, Ethan Gee/Stuart Webb won, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 3 Tim Nguyen/Jeff Spitz took 7-5, 6-0, 6-0 sets.

You can call the Laguna Beach High girls' golf team champion of the Orange Coast League. The Breakers clinched the league title Oct. 16 by winning matches against Estancia and Costa Mesa (by forfeit) at Costa Mesa Country Club's Mesa Linda Golf Course (par 35). It is the fourth girls' golf title in school history and first for Head Coach Scott Finn, as well as the first title in the Orange Coast League. Laguna won its first league championship in 2007 by taking the Golden West League title with a 10-0 record.

Back on the court for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team continued with the second half of its Orange Coast League season Tuesday and disposed of host Estancia, 17-1. Laguna scored eight of a possible nine points in singles play, and swept in doubles action. Ryan Gee (6-1, 6-1, 6-0) and Zack Washer (6-0, 6-2, 6-2) both swept, and Sterling Dudley-Bowen won two sets (6-2, 2-6, 7-5) in singles play. In doubles, Alex Duong teamed with Ethan Gee (6-4, 6-1 6-0)

The Laguna Beach High boys' and girls' track and field teams each were victorious in their final Orange Coast League competition before heading into spring break. The Laguna girls team glided past host Estancia, 65-25, while the boys, 101-24, over the Eagles on March 27. Both Breakers teams improved to 2-0 in league. Event winners for the Laguna girls were: Tessa Hopper (100 meters); Brielle Budroe (200 meters, 1,600 meters); Johana Abarca (400 meters); Katie Greydon (800 meters)

It was a day filled with heartbreak for the Laguna Beach High cross country program at the CIF Southern Section Division Championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. The Breakers boys' and girls' teams just missed the cut for the CIF State Meet by one spot, as both placed eighth in Division 4 competition with the top seven each earning a trip to Woodward Park in Fresno for the elite event on Saturday . "We had a lot of good individual performances but just as a whole we have to pull it together," Laguna Beach girls' Coach Steve Lalim said.

The Laguna Beach High baseball team tuned up for the start to the Orange Coast League season by splitting a doubleheader Tuesday against San Juan Hills. The Breakers dropped the opening game, 4-2, but came back to down the visiting Stallions, 3-1, in the second game. In the opener, junior Steven Harrison went two for two with a run scored. "We just missed on a couple timely hits that could have earned us a win," Laguna Coach Mike Bair said of the Game One loss. Senior Kurt Rebone ran his pitching record to 2-0 in Laguna's 3-1 win in the second game.

A two-week layoff didn't seem to faze the Laguna Beach boys' volleyball team Tuesday. The Breakers got back into action and took a step closer to repeating as Orange Coast League champion by sweeping host Saddleback, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19. With the win, the Breakers - ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division 2 - improved to 5-0 in league and 15-7 overall. "Our middles were much more involved and led our offense," Laguna Coach Scott Panaro said of the 13 and 11 kills, respectively, for middle blockers Maxx McCarter and Noah Blanton.

The 2013 season got underway March 1 on a winning note for the Laguna Beach High boys' and girls' swim teams. The Laguna boys defeated Pacifica, 107-63, and the girls' team scored a 130-39 win over the Mariners. In the girls' win, Makenzie Fischer won the 200-yard and 100 freestyle events and teamed with Lexi Del Toro, MacKenzie Baldridge and Sydney Saxe, to win both the 200 and 400 free relays. Saxe won the 50 free, Del Toro the 100 breaststroke, Abby Cohn both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Natalie Selin won the 100 butterfly, and Kirra Nash won the 500 free.

Showing no signs of a let up in Orange Coast League play, the Laguna Beach High baseball team continued its assault toward another league title by winning three road games in the past week. Following a two-day, two-game sweep at Saddleback, Laguna went to Estancia Tuesday and took a 13-1 victory from the Eagles. Grant Wilhelm was a key for the Laguna offense, going three for five and driving in four runs. Preston GrandPre (two RBIs) and Richie Nunis (RBI) also had three hits.

Bill Rolfing called it a "monumental match" when his Laguna Beach High girls' soccer team took on visiting Calvary Chapel Monday in a key Orange Coast League matchup. It was a huge game, indeed, for the Breakers who had a shot at claiming a rare feat: winning a league championship. They did just that, by taking a 1-0 victory what turned out to be a special Senior Night at Guyer Field. The title was delivered in the game's 25th minute from a corner kick by senior Katelyn Carballo was redirected by junior Paige Vitolo who found a waiting Janie Crawford, and Crawford, a junior, slammed in what turned out to be the winning goal from close range.

A 12-day layoff, and two months' worth of playing games on the road, came to an end in Santa Ana Wednesday for the Laguna Beach High boys' basketball team. The Breakers have played each of their first 17 games of the 2013-14 season on foreign courts. That 17th game tipped off Wednesday at Saddleback High and it marked the Orange Coast League opener for both teams. The Breakers steamroller the Roadrunners and the defending league champions ran away with a 74-25 victory. Laguna took a 21-8 lead after one quarter, held a 35-17 halftime advantage, and then held Saddleback to only eight second-half points and held the Roadrunners scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The Laguna Beach High boys' and girls' swim teams completed perfect Orange Coast League dual meet seasons and both repeated as dual meet champions after each defeated Saddleback Wednesday. The Laguna girls claimed their sixth consecutive league dual meet crown by defeating the Roadrunners, 132-29. The boys' team made it five straight dual meet titles by winning, 134-36. Both teams finished their league dual meet season 5-0. "I am proud of the kids and I am looking forward to seeing them swim well at league," Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said.
