The Laguna Beach High boys? tennis doubles tandem of senior Rex Miller and Mikey Rubel advanced to the second round at the prestigious 109th annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament over the weekend. Miller and Rubel defeated Jordan Belk and Steven Chew of Venice, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round of CIF doubles. In the second round, they fell to eventual doubles finalists Walter Kehrer and Daniel McCall of Brentwood, 6-0, 6-0. ?[Kehrer and McCall] were just really solid players,? Laguna Beach Coach Aaron Talarico said.

It's been a busy, and successful, start to the month of May for the Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team. Laguna began its postseason journey Wednesday on its home court against Santa Maria. The Orange Coast League champion Breakers, the No. 4 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 tournament, cruised to a 16-2 victory over the Saints (Los Padres League No. 3). Santa Maria had defeated Thacher (Condor League No. 3) in a wild-card match Tuesday to move on to the first-round match at Laguna.

Injuries may have put a damper on the first half of the season for the Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team, but they haven't stopped the Breakers from once again taking control of the Orange Coast League race. At the start of the second half of the league season, Laguna sits atop the standings at 5-0. The Breakers picked up their latest win on March 28 by taking an 11-7 match from host Saddleback. It also was the fifth win, overall, for the Breakers who are ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division.

Local arts center project launched Laguna Beach native Gaylen Corbett and her business partner Virginia Repasky are working to create a community arts center in South Orange County. The two founded the OC Arts Center in 2010 and have launched a fundraising drive, according to Corbett. Corbett is a graphic designer who grew up in Laguna Beach, and Repasky is an arts professional on the business side. "There are hundreds of artists living in this area, yet there's no one central location where they can come together to work, collaborate with other artists and share their talents with the community," Corbett said in a news release.

Fifteen-year-old Benito Romeo hopes to become a professional tennis player. Jimmy Gleason once shared the same vision, but gave up on his dream more than 10 years ago. Gleason headed in a new direction after a harsh, first-round tournament loss. His new goal is to help young aspiring tennis players — like Romeo — reach their full potential in order to make their own dreams become a reality. Although Romeo and Gleason are at opposite ends of their tennis careers, they do have something in common: Both are in their first year at Laguna Beach High.

The Laguna Beach High boys' and girls' swim teams completed perfect Orange Coast League dual meet seasons and both repeated as dual meet champions after each defeated Saddleback Wednesday. The Laguna girls claimed their sixth consecutive league dual meet crown by defeating the Roadrunners, 132-29. The boys' team made it five straight dual meet titles by winning, 134-36. Both teams finished their league dual meet season 5-0. "I am proud of the kids and I am looking forward to seeing them swim well at league," Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said.

The Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team jumps right into the foray of the 2013 season by playing six matches over a 10-day period. The Breakers return several key ingredients from a 2012 team that last year reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 tournament under first-year head coach Don Davis. Among those returning are the top two singles players, All-CIF player and Orange Coast League champion Teague Hamilton, and league finalist and runner-up to the singles title, Morgan Lebby.
