Tom Titus Lagunans -- most of them anyway -- have a pretty well developed sense of humor, as well as a thick skin, the result of enduring endless jibes about the Art Colony on subjects ranging from traffic to lifestyle. Some of them even enjoy poking fun at themselves, as writers Bree Burgess Rosen and Tim Dey began doing 10 years ago. They created an evening of skits called "Lagunatics" as a fund-raiser for Laguna Shanti. The event was a howling success, and it's gotten bigger every year.

{LDQUO}Mad Hot Ballroom" is a delightful documentary about three groups of fifth-graders from New York City public schools whose lives gain class and dignity by their participation in a citywide ballroom dancing competition. Told in the spirit of "Spellbound," last year's charming documentary of school youngsters in a national spelling bee, "Mad Hot Ballroom" also examines the home lives of several of the children who learn poise and the benefits of team participation, and the effect this has on the process of growing up. Sometimes touching and oft times hilarious, "Mad Hot Ballroom" is as engaging for the audience as the dance competition is for the young students.

Tom Titus Teri Ralston is home again, in Laguna Beach, but the celebrated musical theater star hasn't left the Broadway stage for good, just until the next big role comes along. The veteran singer/actress/director has amassed a long and impressive list of credits on Broadway, in L.A. theater and on television since she played the teenage Luisa in a Laguna Playhouse production of "The Fantasticks" back in 1965 -- including three featured roles as a member of an original Broadway cast.

Sunday was living proof that the performing arts are a vibrant component of Laguna’s cultural life. No Square Theatre resumed Open Mic Night at the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club, an opportunity for locals to sing in front of a supportive audience. A little earlier in the afternoon, Bearfoot Bluegrass wowed the crowd at an al fresco concert at Aliso Creek Inn and Golf Course. Applause was generous for all of the locals who vocalized at the Woman Club, but Chris Quilter’s turn at the microphone delighted and surprised the audience, including family members.

The Laguna Community Concert Band scored another hit performance Monday at the Festival of Arts. The concert was a musical triumph that few would have imagined when the idea of a community band was first conceived over a cup of coffee in 1998 at Zinc Café. Founders Bill Nicholls , Teresa Marino and Carol Reynolds had come up with an idea whose time was long overdue. In the beginning the band had to beg to be heard. Many in the audience at the early concerts were there because of their friendship with the original band members: local conductor Ed Peterson , musicians Dennis White, Ken Hanson, Sheryl Caverly, Niko Theris and the three founders.
