CHERRIL DOTY Oh! You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I'm telling you why: Saturday morning. A clean fresh weekend feeling washes over me as I walk out to the Sawdust Festival grounds for a day at Winter Fantasy. My mind is wrapped around organizational thoughts as I stride apace. I am enjoying the fresh air and sunshine on my face as I walk. Something catches my eye -- some movement off to my right up ahead. Then, I notice the half dozen or so people staring up the hill.

CHERRIL DOTY "A great deal depends upon the thought patterns we choose and on the persistence with which we affirm them." -- Piero Ferrucci "Past, present and future -- it all seems to meet in this space around holiday time." Can it be just a year ago that I wrote those words? Sometimes a year just goes by too fast. Each year, as the frenzy of holiday time catches me up in its arms, I find myself looking backward and forward at once. Backward over the year that has passed.

In the past I’ve put forth a few New Year’s resolutions in this spot, but my only resolution this year is to make it all the way to next year. It’s no longer something to take for granted. At my age, Steve McQueen had been dead for nine years. I notice now that I’ve developed a few little vertical lines under my lower lip, like Edward Everett Horton. The very fact that I know who Edward Everett Horton was indicates I’m no better than about 80-20 to be around next January.

With the holiday season upon us, our attention turns to festive celebrations with family and friends, reflections on the year gone by, and a renewed sense of optimism for the year ahead. I know that as I gather with my friends and loved ones this month, I will take time to remember those whose holidays will not be as safe or comfortable as our own. As a veteran of the United States Army, I think daily of the countless brave military men and women from Orange County, California and the rest of our nation ?

Yes, the City of Laguna Beach has helped bail out our Sacramento leaders who are simply unable to manage their finances in a prudent way. Based on the best information available (since the State budget negotiations occur behind closed doors!), our City of 25,000 is in the pot for about $3 million. That equals $120 for every Laguna resident. There will be a one-time abrogation of $2 million in property taxes.   There will also be a loss of $1 million in gasoline taxes. While this is intended to be $500,000 per year for two years, the likelihood is that this rip-off will continue in the future as the State remains unable to balance its budget without accounting gimmicks and usurping money from other governmental agencies.

The Laguna Art Museum director announced Monday that he is stepping down May 13. Bolton Colburn started as a curator in 1987 and assumed the role of director after the Newport Harbor Art Museum and Laguna Art Museum merged in 1997.
