Senior outside hitter Chanel Stewart and junior setter Allison Palmer have been named to the 2010 All-CIF Southern Section Division 1A girls' volleyball team. The All-CIF teams for all divisions, selected by the Girls' Volleyball Coaches' Selection Committee and presented by the LA84 Foundation, were released Tuesday. Twelve players were selected to the Division 1A team, headed by Player of the Year Krista Vansant, a senior outside hitter from Redlands East Valley. Coach of the Year honors went to Marymount Coach Cari Klein.

Five members of the Laguna Beach High boys? water polo team have been named to the 2008 All-CIF-Southern Section Boys? Water Polo Division III Team. The team was selected by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches? Assn. Senior Victor Alcone was named to the 13-member first team. He was joined on the team by Nolan McConnell, the lone freshman to make first team and only one of two ? Redlands? Eric Dyer was named third team ? to make the Division III team. Two Breakers also were named to the second team: seniors Preston Head and Brett Thompson.

Noah Brewster, who will begin his senior year at Laguna Beach High in September, has been named an honorable mention player at the So Cal Cup III. The baseball tournament, played at Long Beach City College, pitted four All-Star teams from Orange County, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles County and San Diego County in round robin play. Each team was composed of a 30-player roster. The Orange County All-Star team, to which Brewster belonged, went undefeated in tournament play.

NJB tryouts are Monday at Thurston Laguna Beach National Junior Basketball (NJB) will hold tryouts for its upcoming winter NJB season Monday at the Thurston Middle School gymnasium. Tryout times for each division are as follows: Boys' and Girls' Div. 4 (second-grade) and Boys' Div. 3 (grades 3/4), 5 to 5:45 p.m.; all girls' divisions (Div. 3, grades 3/4; Div. 2, grades 5/6; Div. 1, grades 7/8), 6 to 6:45 p.m.; Boys' Div. 2 (grades 5/6) and Boys' 5th-Grade and 6th-Grade All-Net, 7 to 7:45 p.m., and Boys' 7th-Grade and 8th-Grade All-Net, 8 to 8:45 p.m. Team practices begin in mid-October and are held once a week at Thurston.

Laguna Beach High fall athletic teams continue to be ranked in five CIF Southern Section polls this week. Below are the latest fall rankings released by the CIF office in Los Alamitos: Girls? Volleyball Division I-A: 1. Dos Pueblos; 2. Santa Barbara; 3. Marymount; 4. El Toro; 5. Laguna Beach ; 6. El Dorado; 7. Los Osos; 8. Valencia/Valencia OLD is Canyon Anaheim; 9. Arroyo Grande; 10. Canyon/Anaheim. Others: West Ranch. Girls? Cross-Country Division IV: 1. La Reina; 2. Mayfield; 3. San Juan Hills; 4. Templeton; 5. Maranatha; 6. JSerra; 7. Paraclete; 8. Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy; 9. Laguna Beach ; 10. Oaks Christian.

The high school cross-country season begins this week and when it does, the Laguna Beach boys? team will begin the year as No. 1. In one of the initial CIF Southern Section fall sports polls of the 2008-09 school year, Laguna was dubbed No. 1 in the Division IV cross-country poll. In the girls? Division IV poll, Laguna was ranked seventh. In addition to its top ranking in the Southern Section, Laguna Coach Dave Brobeck said that the Breakers were ranked second in the CIF State rankings, behind central California power McFarland High.

The CIF Southern Section office released its preseason rankings for boys' water polo and girls' volleyball Monday. Defending-champion Laguna was voted the top-rated team in Division 3 boys' water polo heading into the 2011 season and the girls' volleyball team, which last year reached the semifinals in Division 1-A, is ranked third. Laguna heads the Division 3 water polo poll and is followed by Damien, Aliso Niguel, Capistrano Valley, Mira Costa, La Canada, Palos Verdes, Peninsula, South Pasadena and Tesoro.
