Two suspects in an armed robbery of two elderly people at the new Laguna Beach Community and Senior Center on Wed. have been taken into custody by Laguna Beach Police, Police Chief Paul Workman announced Friday. The robbery took place at 4:40 p.m. in the underground parking lot at the center, 380 Third St. The two Laguna Beach residents, ages 62 and 73, were allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two males, one of whom held a hand gun and demanded money while the other acted as a lookout, police said.

Police said one man and two women were arrested Monday after a robbery in Laguna Beach that may have been set up by one of the alleged victims. At 8:37 p.m. Sunday in the gated Irvine Cove community, Tasmen Lamont Lorenson, 29, of Costa Mesa is suspected of robbing a couple at knifepoint and taking the male victim's wallet, keys and iPhone, Police Chief Paul Workman said. Lorenson then allegedly drove off in the male victim's silver 2003 Mercedes-Benz. Laguna Beach police notified the Orange County Auto Theft Task Force, which found the Mercedes parked in a Costa Mesa alley Monday morning, according to the release.

A man suspected of robbing a Laguna Niguel Starbucks at gunpoint while wearing a gas mask on Nov. 30 was arrested later that evening in Laguna Beach, police said. Kyle Kamal Starner, 20, was arrested at 7:25 p.m. after he was detained by a Laguna Beach Police officer at BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, 280 S. Coast Hwy. The Laguna Niguel Starbucks was robbed around 11 a.m. and an unspecified amount of money was reportedly taken. Witnesses told police the man left the scene on a bike.

Andrew Edwards Santa Ana police have arrested men suspected in an armed robbery at a South Laguna convenience store. Santa Ana investigators believe the pair, 18-year-old Tyler McCulley of Tustin and 21-year-old Corey Poulen, a resident of an unincorporated area near Santa Ana, are responsible for several robberies throughout Orange County. The two were arrested Monday night and booked at Santa Ana jail, police said. "There are 44 robberies in the county that our crime analysis people believe these guys are responsible for," Santa Ana Sgt. Carlos Rojas said.

Shots rang out in a Laguna Beach neighborhood around 11 a.m. Oct. 19 as police opened gunfire on a bank robbery suspect who allegedly fired first and took employees hostage for a brief time at Citizens Bank on Glenneyre Street. Following the firefight, officers took Michael Edward Sousa of Acton into custody unharmed. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Orange County Jail. One bystander was injured by Sousa’s gunfire, officials said. Sousa, 52, has been charged with firing on a police officer and armed robbery along with other crimes including kidnapping for robbery, assault with a firearm and car theft.

A pile of pink cash and scattered shell casings littered the ground in a small alley on Glenneyre St. after police opened fire on a gun-wielding man. The man was fleeing the scene after firing shots as he robbed a nearby Citizens Bank around 11 a.m. Friday. Despite the short firefight, officers took Michael Edward Sousa of Acton, California, into custody with no injuries. He is charged with the attempted murder of a police officer and armed robbery. Sousa entered the bank, 800 Glenneyre St., wearing a plastic Halloween mask.

Firefighters, helicopter rescue mountain biker Laguna Beach firefighters rescued a mountain biker who crashed while racing down the Telonics Bike Trail, near Alta Laguna Park, on Saturday, according to a news release from the Fire Department. Another biker found the injured person and called 911 at 10:02 a.m. Saturday. Once on scene, firefighters had to hike down the trailhead to reach the victim. Due to the victim's injuries and the terrain of the area, an Orange County Fire Authority helicopter was requested to airlift the victim to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

Laguna Beach police arrested a man on suspicion of robbery and recovered stolen cash following a heist at a downtown bank around noon Wednesday, according to a department news release. Kyle Alan Veach, 24, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and a parole violation after police spotted him at the bus depot at Jasmine Street and North Coast Highway, according to police. No one was injured and police did not disclose how much money was taken from U.S. Bank at 310 Glenneyre St. A bank employee called police at 11:58 a.m. Wednesday to report that a man robbed the bank and fled, according to the release.

Laguna Beach detectives, with help from Los Angeles police, arrested two men who allegedly robbed three men and pistol whipped two of them inside a Laguna Beach home last October, according to a Laguna Beach police news release. Officers took Tyrone Lamont Beasley, 21, and Jyvontaye Demetric Harris, 20, both of Los Angeles, into custody at separate locations in South Los Angeles on Monday, Laguna Beach Police Capt. Jason Kravetz said in the release. Police arrested Beasley at a home.

Two men from a San Diego gang were sentenced Friday in connection with two Orange County robberies, one of which was in Laguna Beach. Michael Burgin, 32, and Adam Weick, 31, were two out of 12 defendants sentenced for a 2009 crime spree involving Baca Jewelers in Laguna Beach and Tustin Village Jewelers in Tustin. Burgin is accused of stealing $1 million worth of watches from the Forest Avenue jewelry store on Aug. 25, 2009. Burgin was given a sentence of 90 years to life in state prison Friday, according to an Orange County District Attorney press release.

Opening statements began Wednesday in the case against three gang members accused of robbing two jewelry stores. Michael Burgin, 32, is accused of stealing $1 million worth of watches from Baca Jewelers in Laguna Beach on Aug. 25, 2009, according to a news release from the Orange County district attorney's office. Two other men, Alonso Jose Lopez, 33, and Pedro Avina Hernandez, 31, were convicted early last year for their roles in that robbery. In all, eight of the 11 defendants in the case have been convicted.

A man and a woman were arrested after a robbery at the Chevron gas station at 604 S. Coast Hwy. on Friday evening. Diana June Mendoza, 18, of Laguna Beach, was charged with robbery, burglary and possession of a controlled substance. Oscar Alberto Cea Valladares, 18, was also charged with burglary. A 17-year-old juvenile from Laguna Beach was released to a parent, according to Lt. Jason Kravetz. Laguna Beach police received a call at 9:11 p.m. that three young men put food items under their sweat shirts and ran out of the gas station.

Laguna Beach Police arrested a man suspected of robbing fast-food joints after two failed stickups Wednesday evening, authorities said. David Brian Mattson, 48, is suspected in a string of 30 robberies of fast-food establishments in various cities, Lt. Jason Kravetz said in a news release. At 8 p.m. Wednesday, employees of Jack in the Box on South Coast Highway called 911 to report an armed robbery had just occurred, Kravetz said. The suspect had pulled through the drive through and pointed a handgun at the employees while demanding money from the cash register, he said.
