It was one-and-done for the Laguna Beach High baseball team in the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs. The Breakers fell at San Dimas, 5-1, in the first round of the playoffs May 21. San Dimas built a 5-0 lead after three innings and the Breakers (14-14), the second-place team from the Orange Coast League, couldn?t recover. Jake Sganga, Mike Maxsenti, Chris Paul and Bret Barrett all had singles for Laguna Beach. Paul scored the lone run, on Maxsenti?s RBI single in the fourth.

Laguna Beach High sophomore Chris Paul has been named Most Valuable Player of the Orange Coast League for baseball. Paul, a shortstop, batted .440 with team-highs of five home runs, 13 doubles and 32 runs batted in for the Breakers (14-14), who finished second in league. Also named to the first team were seniors Gabe Stansbury and Dillon Pierce, and junior Casey Miller. Stansbury batted .402 with three homers and 28 RBIs, while Pierce hit .351. Miller hit .324 and was 6-5 with a 3.03 earned-run average as the team?

LAGUNA BEACH ? Laguna Beach trailed Fountain Valley until late in the third period of Saturday?s Division II National Junior Basketball boys? game at Thurston Middle School. Once the Breakers took the lead, however, they never let it go and went on to earn a 42-37 victory to bring their perfect record to 11-0. George MacCabe kept Laguna Beach within striking distance, forcing himself under the basket twice for timely lay-ups. He went on to score a game-high 19 points, but by the end of the second period, Laguna Beach still trailed, 24-21.

The Laguna Beach girls' Division 2 (5th/6th grade) team followed up its undefeated regular season by winning its first two games in the National Junior Basketball Championship Series Tournament last weekend. Laguna opened the tournament Saturday and scored a 43-31 win over La Verne/San Dimas. Rachel Kenney made some key baskets to get her team off to a fast start. Sophia Lucas hit shots from all over and had a big second half to lead the team to the win. Laguna returned to action Sunday and easily handled Encinitas, winning, 36-10.

Breakers baseball still No. 5 The Laguna Beach baseball team continued its hold on the CIF Southern Section Division 4 rankings, coming in at No. 5 for a second straight week. Bishop Amat also held down the top spot for the second week in a row. The rest of the top 10 is Palm Desert, Oaks Christian, Torrance, Laguna Beach, Chino, Indio, Colony, La Quinta/La Quinta, Troy and San Dimas. Colony and San Dimas are new to the poll, replacing La Quinta/La Quinta and Nogales. In boys' tennis, Laguna again is ranked third in a Division 4 poll.

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team enters the 2005 season in a position previous teams in the program have enjoyed throughout the years: a preseason top 10 ranking. The Breakers have been assigned the No. 3 slot in the Division II preseason poll. The CIF-Southern Section office in Los Alamitos released on Monday the preseason polls for boys' volleyball, baseball, softball and boys' tennis Laguna's boys' volleyball team was the only school spring sports squad to be ranked in a preseason poll.

This may be the year that the Laguna Beach High baseball team can accomplish big things. ?This process started three years ago,? Coach Jeff Sears said. ?Now it?s time to reap the benefits. We believe we?re a pretty good ballclub.? Laguna finished 14-14 last year, second in the Orange Coast League to Costa Mesa and lost in the CIF Southern Section Division IV first round to eventual-champion San Dimas. The Breakers have not won a league title in 47 years. ?We?re a baseball school, and our kids are starting to buy into that,?
