The rain forecast for Friday?s Hospitality Night gave Laguna Beach merrymakers an unexpected reprieve. The clouds dissipated, and the streets were instead flooded with visitors for the holiday bash, which ran the length of Forest Avenue on Dec. 7 for the 51st year. Folks crowded around city hall to witness the lighting of the historic pepper tree, which has stood in the spot since 1881. It was covered with more than 18,000 lights for Laguna?s own holiday tradition. Special guest Santa Claus arrived with a police and fire escort.

"Simply amazing" is the best way I can describe this year's Pageant of the Masters. Which is great considering this is the 75th anniversary ? otherwise known as the diamond jubilee year of the pageant, which began in 1932. Since this was my first year being lucky enough to attend, I can't compare this year's performance to years' past. I can tell you, however, that it was captivating from beginning to end. This year's performance begins with conductor Rich Head waving what could be likened to a magic wand as he leads his orchestra from one musical verse to another.

Santa Claus is coming to town for Hospitality Night, but he won't be lighting the pepper tree in front of City Hall. The city moved Santa's traditional drop-off spot to the corner of Forest Avenue and Glenneyre Street in order to manage the traffic expected for Friday night's football game, a league semifinal between Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar high schools. Temporary seating has been added at the high school's athletic field to accommodate the expected crowd. "We are very excited to have both of these wonderful events in Laguna Beach on Friday, and the city is taking every measure to provide more parking and better circulation," said Community Services Director Susan Cannan.
