There is no better theme song for the rich tradition of summertime surfing here in Laguna than Laguna’s musical band of hipness, “Honk.” Listening to Brad and David’s theme song just makes you want to go outside and embrace summer. Being back from Chicago last week, and surfing in front of my parents’ home, was like an old school reunion. Warm water. Sunny skies. Fun waves. Good friends. Simply put, I love it. I have so many good memories of that beach it’s unbelievable.

Laguna summers can be crowded affairs, with clean south swells, family barbeques and summer camps (to name just a few) all vying for a spot on the weekly agenda. Many of these activities will fade into the recesses of our cerebral hard drives, with a scant few relegated to ?classic? or even ?all time? memory status. Last summer several Laguna groms stashed away a few of those special summer moments down at Camp Pendleton (near Trestles) helping a group of surfers that produce an amazing event called ?

Don’t call it a comeback; I’ve been here before. It’s been five long years since I put on a contest jersey. However, give me a good reason and I’ll gladly get out there, like this coming Sunday for Oceana’s “Save Our Surf” Surf-A-Thon and pro/celebrity expression session — followed by their celebrity gala the same evening. Former world champion Shaun Tomson and “Hollywood Dreams” actress Tanna Fredrick will co-host the surfing events from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Bloch exhibit this weekend Billabong will host an exhibition of Wolfgang Bloch?s work at Laguna Art Museum from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with Chronicle?s release of a book on his life and art. The book follows the life-path of Bloch?s childhood in Ecuador, his move to America, his art education, the winding journey through California culture, the surf industry and, eventually, his return to the world of art. Surf film screening Sept. 15 The Surfing Heritage Foundation, 110 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente, will present a 35-year anniversary screening of Laguna-based MacGillivray Freeman Films' "Five Summer Stories" Sept. 15. Greg MacGillivray will be there to celebrate and discuss his film along with a growing panel of surfers who are in the film. Confirmed to attend at this time are Shaun Tomson, David Nuuhiwa, Angie Reno, Jericho Poppler and Ben Aipa. Doors will open at 7 p.m.; tickets are $10, with VIP seating for $25. John Fortson has been a fixture behind the bar at Milano's Cucina Italiana on Brand Boulevard since it opened in 1992, but tending bar is only half his story. Acting is where his true heart lies and Milano's patrons who have come to know him well, both for his ability to shake a great martini and from his television and film roles including "My Big Fat Independent Movie," "7th Heaven" and "ER," have banded together to support his new venture. His new solo-performance play, "Loveswell," in which he stars, will take you on a journey of a man getting in touch with his emotions.
