Jazz saxophonist performs Saturday Award-winning saxophonist Jackiem Joyner will perform live from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the Festival of Arts grounds as part of the Summer Smooth Jazz Concert Series. Dubbed ??Lil Man Soul,? the urban jazz artist, composer and producer who won the 2009 ?Best Debut Artist of the Year? by Smooth Jazz news, will perform hip, up-tempo songs from his 2007 debut album, ?Babysoul.? Festival of Arts plans 'food fight' The Festival of Arts and Laguna Culinary Arts will present two Food Fight -- Culinary Competitions and Demonstrations on the festival grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Saturday at noon. Similar to the top-rated show "Iron Chef America" on the Food Channel, the Festival will have two individual cooking stations set up in the center of their grounds. These stations will include a vast array of food and spices, as well as a complete line of cooking equipment.

While many head to the Sawdust Festival to check out new exhibits and old favorites, the visual arts aren't the only treat to be found. There are 64 music acts playing throughout the Festival, with 25 new acts this year. "The musical entertainment adds to the atmosphere and compliments the artwork being exhibited," marketing and community relations manager Rebecca Meekma said. "Just like our artists who exhibit all art forms, from ceramics to painting to metal sculpture and printmaking, our musicians cover the range of musical styles.

From musicals to drama to standup comedy, the upcoming season at the Laguna Playhouse was chosen to satisfy the taste of Laguna's theatergoers. The 2013-14 season was announced Wednesday evening at a reception at the Hotel Laguna for enthusiastic Playhouse patrons, who were treated to a surprise appearance by Davis Gaines, who will star with Vicki Lewis in the season opener, "I Do! I Do!" Gaines and his accompanist, Bob Hawkins, were introduced by Playhouse Artistic Director Ann E. Wareham, who cohosted the reception with Executive Director Karen Wood.

It resembled a midterm election rally in the old Boom Boom Room: red balloons, smooth jazz, refreshments and heavy-duty political talk. But instead of election maps on the walls, there was art. Artist Louis Longi invited people to an event March 14 to gather signatures supporting his live-work project in Laguna Canyon. The issue is supposed to go before the City Council on April 1. What started last year as a routine 30-unit live-work housing proposal has turned into a heated battle, pitting some neighbors against Longi.
