"It's spring fever….You don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!" —Mark Twain * Spring Break. The words conjure many things for me and even spark a bit of mischief with a play on words — I brake for spring. I've got the fever and it makes me want more. More creative time. More play. More energy. More spring. Sunshine days. Cool spring breezes. Laughter. Spring seems to be a harbinger of renewed creative energy — here in Laguna Beach at least.

CHASING DOWN THE MUSE There is an expectant flurry among all the bird life outside. Song falls from their mouths like the abundant seed from the garden feeder. I catch up the tune before it can hit the ground -- "Come out and play," it seems to say. I've got it bad. Spring fever, that is. The colors call out to me to frolic and play. Green yells out to me to come roll in the grass. Yellow shouts to me to dance. Red beckons me to open wings and take flight.

Is there anything better than daylight saving? Well maybe a couple of things — like a good swell, north or south, it doesn’t matter. I’ll take a straight closed-out west swell for that matter. This year has to be the flattest of my aging 38. In surfing years, I’m like 105. There are two guys who know every swell of every year and actually keep records of it. One is Dennis McTighe, who’s like a walking encyclopedia of wind, weather and swell. The other is Ray Williams, a longtime Laguna surfer who keeps records while waiting for his next game of volleyball.

Surfers of all ages took part in the Laguna Surf and Sport Spring Fever Surfabout last weekend. Seven athletes won division titles at the 11th annual event, which started Saturday and concluded Monday at Thalia Street beach. Below are the top finishes in all divisions: * Girls: 1. Alisa Cairns; 2. Staci Diggins; 3. Marlee Grosher; 4. Maddy Kristensen; 5. Coco Putnam; 6. Dakota Shyres. Elementary: 1. Bobby Gavin; 2. Tre Lockhart; 3. Colton Gregory; 4. Julian Goldberg; 5. Tai Diggins; 6. Sam Nelsen; 7. Kiko Nelsen.

Six local athletes came away with first-place finishes Sunday at Laguna Surf and Sport?s Spring Fever Surfabout. The one-day surf contest, under the guidance of contest director Jason Watson ? who finished in third-place in the Pro Division ? was held at Thalia Reef. The six winners were Jon Rose (Pro), Eric Nelson (35-and-Up Legends); Bobby Cherry (Men?s 19-34), Porter Hogan (Junior Men?s 15-18), Hunter Smith (14-and-Under) and Taylor Pitz (Girls).
