In a typical business cycle, there are four steps: ?Boom ?Crash ?Recession and Depression ?Recovery In regard to the business cycle, there are two authors who have historically attracted wide followings: Karl Marx and Maynard Keynes. Other economists, Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman for example, developed followers but they never obtained mass support such as the theories of Marx and Keynes. Marx developed theories that are the basis for Communism and socialism.

CHASING DOWN THE MUSE 'He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead ... " I think that when Albert Einstein made this statement, he cannot have been thinking of the word in its full meaning of reverence, respect, dread and wonder. When we say something is "awesome," dread is not what comes to mind. But when we consider antonyms for "awe" -- disrespect, disregard, apathy, or indifference -- Einstein's point is well taken.

WEATHER TIDBITS For openers, regarding the June-gloom October we just endured and the sports-type stats that I probably easily lifted from a data base ... just to clear things up (no pun intended) ... To paraphrase the guy in the movie "Blazing Saddles," "Data base? What data base? We don't need no stinkin' data base!" Ask anybody who knows me in this town. I am a walking dot-com! I have personal comprehensive daily weather and surf records that go back to October 1957.

Chamber to mix at Community Clinic The Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce is holding its August mixer from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20, at the Laguna Beach Community clinic, 362 Third St. The cost is $10 for members, and $15 for nonmembers. Blue Laguna restaurant to open The Blue Laguna Restaurant & Lounge is celebrating its grand opening Saturday, at the Holiday Inn at 696 S. Coast Hwy. The entrepreneur behind L.A.?s Blue Moon Lounge is opening the Blue Laguna with a sunny patio, tropical shaded back patio, swanky lounge and restaurant all under one roof, with live music, happy hours, and specialty nights.

  Stanley Jay Schiller died peacefully, of natural causes, on the evening of January 22 at Mission Hospital. He was 85. His loving wife, Thelma, as well as all 5 of his sons were by his side. Remarkably, he fought just long enough to be able to see two sons who traveled from New Jersey and Hawaii on the afternoon of January 22. Stan, above everything, loved his family. He was a devoted father to his 5 sons and devoted husband to his wife, Thelma.

Barbara Diamond The Laguna Beach Community Concert Band was a pipe dream in 1998. "We had eight members and our audience was family and really good friends," said Carol Reynolds, one of the founders. Today, there are 50 members, including the original eight: founders Theresa Marino, William Nicholls and Reynolds; Niko Theris, Kathryn Sanders, Dennis White, Hunter Cook and Allen Cohen. "To see this group now from the way they were makes me cry," fan Sande St. John said.

After school on Wednesday — one day after a massive sell-off in the Shanghai stock market caused the Dow Jones index to plummet by more than 400 points — more than two dozen students trooped past a large Chinese flag in Dave Dixon's Thurston Middle School classroom. The students were there to learn Standard Mandarin, the world's most common language. Researchers have found that more than 1 billion people worldwide speak Mandarin Chinese, but only about a half-billion speak English.

PTA's Coffee Break last month welcomed Dr. Judy Willis at the Aliso Creek Inn & Golf Course to speak about the application of neuroscience to practical aspects of child-rearing. Willis, a neurologist and educator, discussed down-to-earth techniques to assist in the development of the critically important "executive function" of the brain's prefrontal cortex. As Willis presented her concepts, the understanding around the room was palpable, and an excitement grew as listeners realized that in simple and easy-to-apply ways, parents really could make a real difference in unlocking greater brain functioning in children.
