Richard Ruskell, the Montage Resort & Spa's executive pastry chef, and Louise Chien, assistant pastry chef, finished in first place for their sugar showpiece at the National Pastry Competition, held July 6 and 7 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix. The Sugar showpiece was a colorful rendition of a queen bee overseeing her hive. The National Pastry Competition was created to bring together the most talented pastry chefs in the country.

Casey Reinhardt and Mahsa Townsend didn't have a tough task when they coined the name for their radio show. All they needed was a short phrase that encompassed the cupcake business, the real estate business and the general topic of love and relationships. The answer was simple: "The Sweet Spot. " Or, at least, it's simple in Reinhardt's telling. "I'm, obviously, in the sweets business - cupcakes," explained the co-host of KX 93.5 FM's Sunday night show , which launched shortly before the new year.

Laguna Beach designer Charlotte Mills of Plum Pretty Sugar offers women an alternative to the shabby bathrobe with a feminine line she describes as "loungerie. " "I always had the idea of Plum Pretty Sugar as the art of getting ready," Mills said. "I think as women we spend so much time in the bathroom getting ready and we've got, like, some towel on. Once we're done, we put on our beautiful dress or gorgeous outfit. "Wouldn't it be nice if we could wear our robe or wear our tunic and feel beautiful all the way through the process?

Charlie and Brandi Hawkins will host their fifth annual Charitable Holiday Party to benefit Music for a Cure from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday at their Laguna Beach home, 705 Temple Hills Drive. The event will feature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a raffle and live auction, and a live performance by rock band Sugar Ray, composed of vocalists and guitarists Mark McGrath and Rodney Sheppard, bassist Murphy Karges, drummer Stan Frazier and Craig “DJ Homicide” Bullock on turntables.

Sugar is a 15-week-old female golden doodle mix. She was abandoned at the animal rescue operation because her owner did not want her anymore. She is currently at the veterinarian's office where she is to have surgery for a unilateral ectopic ureter. Sugar is a very sweet, loyal and loving little girl. A few years ago we wrote an article about the perfect peach. This article might be titled “The Imperfect Peach.” This has been a particularly good season for stone fruit and the Laguna Farmer’s Market has featured a plethora of tasty varieties at reasonable prices.
