Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach was part of the USA Water Polo Women's Youth National Team that won the gold medal Saturday at the UANA Youth Pan American Championships at Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fischer, 14, scored two goals in the gold medal game which Team USA won, 10-6, over Canada. The Laguna Beach High freshman started a 3-0 scoring run by the U.S. to start the fourth quarter to help the team open up a 9-4 advantage. She is the youngest player on the Women's National Youth Team and is a first-year member on the team.

USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team posted an 0-3 record at the Volo Cup which concluded Sunday at Szolnok, Hungary. Team USA dropped games to Serbia, Germany and Hungary in a tournament that started Friday . In Sunday's game against Hungary, Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach/Long Beach State) scored once in Team USA's in a 12-5 loss to the host team. McConnell also scored once in Team USA's 20-11, tournament-opening loss Feb. 7 to Serbia. Team USA dropped its second tourney game, 20-12, Saturday to Germany.

The USA Women's Junior National Water Polo Team improved to 3-0 in group play Wednesday by downing New Zealand, 12-5, at the FINA Junior World Championships in Volos, Greece. Laguna Beach High's Makenzie Fischer is a member of the U.S. team. The junior-to-be, a utility player and the only high school player on the team, scored twice in Team USA's tournament-opening, 14-4 victory Monday over Kazakhstan. Team USA scored an 8-5 win over Italy in its second match Aug. 20. The three victories gives Team USA a bye into the tournament quarterfinals.

Volleyball tourneys are Saturday The Laguna Beach Open Men's and Women's Beach Volleyball Tournaments will play host to the Christmas Four Person Draw Volleyball Tournament and Potluck starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at South Main Beach. There is no registration cost. The tournament format is a four-person (coed) draw with two divisions (Social and Open). Pool play games will be held first before the start of elimination round competition. Families will be allowed to sign up together as a team.

The USA Women's and Men's Senior National Water Polo teams clinched berths to the upcoming 2014 FINA World Cup. The USA Women's Team, which includes local athletes Annika Dries (Laguna Beach High/Stanford) and Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach High), defeated Canada, 15-7, on Dec. 8 to win the best-of-three series with Canada at the FINA World Cup Qualification tournament at Foothill High. Fischer led the Team USA offense in the final with three goals. The Laguna Beach High junior started the match's scoring.

Designed for incoming freshmen through 12th-grade players, Laguna Beach High School Volleyball Summer Camp starts with its first weekly session Monday. The camp runs between 4 to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday. The freshman-senior camps also are offered the weeks of Aug. 12-15 and Aug. 19-22. The camp is designed to help incoming players, with no or limited experience or have not played on a previous boys' volleyball team at Laguna Beach, to become more familiar with game skills and rules.

Laguna Beach lifeguards are putting their skills to the test once again this week at the Nautica United States Lifesaving Assn. National Lifeguard Championships at Manhattan Beach. More than 1,000 lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards were expected to compete in team and individual ocean and beach course events. The Lifeguard National Championships run daily starting at 8 a.m. through Saturday. The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Assn. has won the title 39 times in the 43-year history of the event including the last 26 national competitions.

Several Laguna Beach Water Polo Club teams will contend for Junior Olympic championships over the coming week as the national water polo tournament gets underway Saturday at various venues throughout Orange County. More than 500 teams and 8,000 athletes are expected to compete for national championship titles in 18 divisions at USA Water Polo's 44th annual Junior Olympics which are divided by into two sessions: Session One starts Saturday and runs through Tuesday. Session Two begins Thursday and concludes Aug. 4. Laguna Beach has qualified five teams for the Junior Olympics.

South Coast physicals offered Wednesday South Coast Medical Group will offer sports physicals to incoming Laguna Beach High athletes for the 2013-14 school year from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and June 7 (2:30 to 5 p.m.) at the school. The Laguna Beach City Youth Flag Football program is offering a winter season for youth grades 2-8. All games and clinics will be held at Laguna Beach High School's Guyer Field. The USA Women's Senior National Team on Tuesday announced its roster of players who will compete at the Canada Cup starting Monday at Gatineau, Canada. Included on the 15-player roster is Laguna Beach High junior Makenzie Fischer. Team USA, coached by Adam Krikorian, will take on Canada and Australia twice before the Dec. 8 championship game. The tournament serves as a primer for the Holiday Cup Dec. 11-15 that will include Team USA, Canada, Australia, Greece, Russia, and the Netherlands.
