Five members of the Laguna Beach High boys? water polo team have been named to the 2008 All-CIF-Southern Section Boys? Water Polo Division III Team. The team was selected by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches? Assn. Senior Victor Alcone was named to the 13-member first team. He was joined on the team by Nolan McConnell, the lone freshman to make first team and only one of two ? Redlands? Eric Dyer was named third team ? to make the Division III team. Two Breakers also were named to the second team: seniors Preston Head and Brett Thompson.

If this is a sign of things to come, then the future of the Laguna Beach High boys' basketball program is heading in the right direction. A team of incoming freshman this fall, many of whom have played together for the past five or six years, have gotten the summer league season off to a successful start. Laguna ran its record to 4-0 by defeating Orange Lutheran in local tournament action, 53-39. Cheyne Martin led Laguna in the tournament title game with a game-high 28 points.

Noah Brewster, who will begin his senior year at Laguna Beach High in September, has been named an honorable mention player at the So Cal Cup III. The baseball tournament, played at Long Beach City College, pitted four All-Star teams from Orange County, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles County and San Diego County in round robin play. Each team was composed of a 30-player roster. The Orange County All-Star team, to which Brewster belonged, went undefeated in tournament play.

Rebounding from its first loss of the season, the Laguna Beach High boys' water polo team responded Tuesday with an 11-6 home victory over Loyola. The Breakers broke open a tight match by outscoring the Cubs, 4-1, in the fourth quarter. Junior attacker Johnny Holcomb led Laguna in scoring with four goals. Mike Dick netted three goals, Adam Kaplan scored twice, and Cameron Brinkman and Peter Phelps each posted a goal. In its previous outing, Laguna found the going tough against second-ranked Foothill, which got seven goals from J.W. Krumpholz and scored a 15-8 nonleague victory at Tustin High.

The Laguna Beach girls? volleyball team served up a big win in its Orange Coast League opener Tuesday at Dugger Gym, and in doing so, served noticed to the rest of the league that the Breakers are the favorite to win a third consecutive league championship. Godinez, a newcomer to the league, found out the hard way. Laguna took care business with a 25-6, 25-4, 25-5 victory over the visiting and outmanned Grizzlies. In a match where all 12 Breakers saw extensive action, Paulette Grand Pre paced a balanced attack with eight kills, 10 aces and seven digs.

LONG BEACH ? Halfway through Saturday's CIF Southern Section Division III 100-yard breaststroke final, Flintridge Prep senior Jeff Kang was halfway to a division title. The last half proved to be his undoing, however, as the Rebel standout was bested by Temescal Canyon freshman Bart Kelly by the slimmest of margins, just .69 hundredths of a second at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza. "I knew going in that I had the faster first half," said Kang, whose first half edged Kelly's 28.53-28.
