The Laguna Beach boys' soccer team hasn't played in a week and on Friday, the Breakers return to action to face Aliso Niguel on the Wolverine's home field. The nonleague match starts at 5 p.m. and is preceded at 3:15 p.m. by the junior varsity and frosh/soph games between the schools. Laguna last played Dec. 9 when the Breakers battled Tesoro to a 1-1 tie. Freshman Harrison Gregory scored the Breakers' goal. "This game was always going to be a really good test for the team," Laguna Coach Daniel Richards said.

The 30th edition of the Dave Mohs Tournament begins today at six local high schools. Sixty-four prep girls? volleyball teams are entered into the three-day event that continues Saturday and concludes with Monday?s championship-round action. The teams are split equally into two divisions. ?It will be a high-level tournament featuring teams from Southern California, Arizona and Utah,? Edison Coach Trent Jackson said. The Laguna Beach High girls? tennis team started off strong with a 14-4 win over Tesoro in its first match of the season on Wednesday. ?We?ve got a great line-up this year, with some really strong players,? Laguna Beach Coach Jimmy Gleason said. In singles action, Alex Tachovsky her three sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Maddie Jaeger also swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 and Haley Moss won one of her singles sets, 6-1, but lost the other two, 6-3, 6-2. The Breakers were equally strong in doubles, with Lauren Michaels and Claire Jaeger winning two of their three sets.

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team ended its regular season Tuesday with a 27-25, 16-25, 17-25, 21-25 Pacific Coast League loss at fourth-ranked Tesoro. Ben Hester had 11 kills and eight aces, Roy McDennon had 10 kills, Xander Olson had nine kills and Clay Knapp 43 assists for the Breakers In a previous league match, Laguna swept visiting University, 25-10, 31-29, 25-16. Olson and Shawn Merz each had 11 kills. The Breakers, who have been hampered by injuries throughout the season, finished tied for third-place in league with a 7-5 record.

Laguna Beach High baseball coach Dave Dopf said he's tired of analyzing the "what ifs" surrounding his team's playoff chances. The 2006 season has come down to just two more regular season games and beginning today, the Breakers hold their postseason fate in their own hands. Today at 3:15 p.m., Laguna travels to Tesoro to take on the Titans in their final Pacific Coast League game. On Tuesday, the Breakers close out the regular season at JSerra. Boys' basketball team starts slow in 71-43 loss to Titans.The season came to an end Wednesday for the Laguna Beach High boys' basketball team, which dropped a 71-43 Pacific Coast League game to Tesoro at Dugger Gymnasium. "We went up against a very good team that has a lot of size," Laguna coach Bret Fleming said. "We played them tough the first time we played them in league, but this time we got down early and couldn't recover." Tesoro jumped to an 18-7 lead after one quarter and extended its lead to 33-17 by the half.

Laguna Beach High girls' basketball team ends season with 83-71 loss.A strong start Wednesday against visiting Tesoro couldn't sustain the Laguna Beach High girls' basketball team, which dropped an 83-71 Pacific Coast League game in the regular season finale for both squads. The Breakers, who honored their senior players before the start of the game, came up with a big first quarter and led, 21-16. But the Titans turned it around in the second quarter, outscoring the Breakers, 25-13, to go up at the half.

Laguna Beach boys' soccer team takes on Tesoro for league win.The Laguna Beach High boys' soccer team concludes its regular season at 3:15 p.m. today at Pacific Coast League rival Tesoro. Laguna, which is 8-1-2 in the league and 13-3-3 overall heading into today's match, can earn an outright league championship with a victory over the Titans. Today's match was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but that game was canceled due to air-quality concerns as a result of the wildfire.

Girls' soccer team drops 4-0 match to Tesoro in final game of the season.The play of his girls' soccer team in the second half of Wednesday's match against Tesoro left a lasting impression on Laguna Beach High coach Bill Rolfing. Despite losing, 4-0, to the visiting Titans, the second-ranked team in CIF-Southern Section Division II, Rolfing was pleased with the way his team battled in the second half of their season-ending match. "We played a lot better in that second half, and the girls really put a lot of heart and effort into their final half of the season," he said.
