The Laguna Beach Fire Department and other fire agencies in Southern California are partaking in the annual Spark of Love toy drive event. The campaign is celebrating its 20th year of collecting and distributing toys and sports equipment to less-fortunate children. Laguna Beach has participated with the program since its inception in 1993. Fire departments from across Southern California — Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside San Bernardino and Ventura counties — will partner up with ABC 7 to collect toys at various stations.

The Saloon in The Peppertree Lane will host their 5th annual Christmas party benefiting Toys for Tots on Monday, Dec. 15th from 6 to 11 p.m.  Admission will be one unwrapped new toy and will be exchanged for a ticket to their opportunity drawing.   The drawing will have an array of wonderful prizes which will be given away all night from the other tenants in the Peppertree Lane: La Rue du Chocolat, Sutton Place and Gelato Paradiso. Other prizes include gift certificates from The Montage and local restaurants such as Sorrento Grille, Zoolu Café, 230, and Thai Brothers and a Sammy Hagar signed guitar.

The Orange County toy collection warehouse that houses toys for charities like "Spark of Love," "Toys for Tots" and "Operation Santa Claus" has run out of toys for children ages newborn to 2 years old and for girls ages 9 to 12. "We have orders to fill but have had to suspend filling certain orders because we are not able to complete them. The volunteers are here and ready, but we need more toys. Lots of them!," said Scott Mather, toy drive coordinator for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The Orange County Toy Collaborative Warehouse for Spark of Love, Toys for Tots, Operation Santa Claus and St. Vincent de Paul is working to complete requests for more than 350,000 toys this holiday season. Without a huge increase in donations, the warehouse will not be able to fill orders, leaving thousands of needy children in Orange County communities without a toy for the holidays. Toys are urgently needed for distribution on Sunday to the agencies. As of last week, the agency was 200,000 toys short.

Local firefighters went above and beyond to ensure a happy Christmas for hundreds of the region's children. They pulled out all the stops to deliver piles of donated toys to the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station while their Marine brethren, who normally make the deliveries, are on deployment in Iraq. "When I think of the other agencies, ours truly had to volunteer, but others were compensated," Laguna Beach Fire Chief Mike Macey said. "They stepped up," he added. "They used their own vehicles, their own gas, their own time."

T he Glendale Centre Theatre's goal has always been to produce quality plays with a "Gee" rating. As in "Gee whiz. Gosh darn. That was a pretty good show, honey." Believe it or don't, that's the kind of thing you'll hear the grown-ups saying in the lobby at the 8 p.m shows. So there's no age-appropriate issue for parents who want to bring the older kids along at night, unless someone forgot to take a nap. When it comes to the kids bringing the parents along, the reverse is not always true.

Christmas morning was undoubtedly merrier for several hundred children who received presents donated by Thurston Middle School. The Laguna Beach school donated more than 300 gifts - nearly double what they gave last year - to low-income families through the Laguna Beach Fire Department's Spark of Love Toy Drive. The school's leadership team on Dec. 14 gave a presentation and pizza lunch for Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse and firefighters from Station 3, who loaded the gifts into a fire truck.

Whalen will continue on Emeritus board of Boys, Girls Club The November elections turned out well for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. Boys & Girls Club past president and board of directors member Bob Whalen was elected to the Laguna Beach City Council. He will continue to serve the club as a founding member of the Emeritus Board. "It has been an amazing honor to work alongside and learn from Bob," said Pam Estes, executive director for the Boys & Girls Club in a release.

When Maya Ciemons, 13, visited a Laguna preschool with some of her peers to put on a holiday party for the tots, she found herself partnered with a small boy who wouldn't talk much and didn't seem to be having much fun. But, she eventually found the way to bring a smile to his lips: a game of tag. "A great moment for me was when he got out of his shell and was having fun," Maya said. "He loved tag. " Thurston Middle School's Peer Assistance Leadership club, or PAL, kicked off the holidays Dec. 5 with a day of giving back that included a holiday celebration at the La Playa Center, dropping off the last donations from a Hunger and Homeless Awareness Food Drive at the Laguna Food Pantry and a visit to Alternative Sleeping Location.

Woman's Club in need of donations for party The Woman's Club will host a party for low-income families, according to a news release. Donations such as clean used clothing, household items, linens and toys are needed for the event, which will take place Dec. 14. Donations can be dropped from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14 at the club, 286 St. Ann's Drive, on the corner of Glenneyre Street. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Dec. 14 with a visit from Santa while parents pick items from those donated.
