The Laguna Beach High boys' soccer team registered its fourth consecutive shutout and the Breakers collected their fourth win of the season in the process Wednesday when they blanked visiting Oxford Academy of Cypress, 2-0, in nonleague play at Guyer Field. Reed Matthews and Willy Wheeler scored goals, Grifan Fair and Hunter Ashworth each had an assist, and senior Bryce Williamson and sophomore Pierce Ashworth both had three saves in goal for Laguna which upped its record to 4-0-1.

Masukawa named second-team All-Southern Section Laguna Beach High's Tyler Masukawa was given a postseason honor this week by being named to the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches' Assn. 2010-11 All-Southern Section Division 4A Team. The junior guard is one of 10 players named to the second-team. He joins senior Chris Joseph of Whittier Christian, seniors Gerard Rivers and Christian Sveiven of Paraclete, sophomore Brad Amburgey of Big Bear, senior German Pompa of La Puente, senior Kishon Sanders of La Salle, sophomore KJ Harris of Morningside, sophomore Mike Peters of Covina and junior Edward Griley of Morro Boy. Breakers baseball holds down at No. 4 The Laguna Beach baseball team, which last week set a new school record for wins in a single season, is again ranked fourth in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 4 rankings.

A year ago, the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational was brought back to life. On Saturday, the fabled track and field competition will resume bigger than ever. About 1,000 athletes from 20 schools will be at Guyer Field on the Laguna Beach High campus Saturday for the event, which is being run for the 43rd time. Competition will be held for both boys' and girls' varsity and frosh/soph teams. Last year, Servite won the boys' division and Trabuco Hills took the girls' crown and Laguna Beach had eight athletes medal, Breakers Coach Scott Wittkop said.

The Laguna Beach High boys? water polo team had little problem advancing Wednesday in postseason play. The Breakers opened the CIF Division III playoffs at home against Great Oak of Temecula Valley and overwhelmed the visitors, 14-6. Laguna led, 5-0, after one quarter and was up, 9-0, at the half. The Breakers shut out the Wolfpack again in the third quarter, where they increased their lead to 13-0. Victor Alcone led the scoring with five goals and also racked up 10 steals.

Laguna Beach?s girls? basketball team earned a seventh-place finish at the Garden Grove Tournament by defeating Santa Ana, 49-40, in their tournament finale Saturday. In the seventh-place game, the Breakers led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter to coast to the win. Three Breakers scored in double figures with Emily LaRose getting 15 points, Tess Grogan 14 and Lauren Kelly 12. Emily Writer and Samantha Garner each scored four points and Garner also hauled in 19 rebounds.

The Laguna Beach High boys' tennis team opened up its season by winning two of its first three matches. First-year head coach Aaron Talarico watched his squad begin its campaign on March 2 with a 10-8 victory over host Trabuco Hills. John Wes Robinson and Sean Ochwat swept at No. 1 doubles for the Breakers, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. On Monday, Laguna posted a 12-6 win over Whitney in the Breakers' home opener. Dony Sand, Sergio Olamendi and Bobby Chapman swept in singles play for the Breakers.
