The tulip is the perhaps the best known of all bulbs. Its brilliant spring display is enjoyed throughout the world. The flowers vary considerably. Tulips are spectacular when massed alone or combine beautifully with other flowers such as alyssum, pansies and violas. Where you decide to enjoy tulips is only limited by your imagination. Tulips are officially divided into divisions, which group related flower types, but are not based on botanical relationships. To simplify my tulip purchases, I generally look for the time of bloom, early and midseason bloomers are labeled as such, and then select the colors, flower shape and size.

THE GARDEN FANATIC "Tiptoe through the tulips." --Tiny Tim "Her Lips were red ...." --Samuel Taylor Coleridge Prior to "mansionization" and "spite hedges," I quietly chose to grow mainly herbaceous plantings. When lonely, however, I indulged myself occasionally with a colorful whimsy in the garden. The passing years found romance and marriage, and Catharine's desire for color, tulips and narcissi became insistent. I began to add potted flowers in great numbers.

"Tiptoe through the tulips … " -- Tiny Tim "Her lips were red … " -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge For a very long time, as a bachelor, I chose to grow mainly herbaceous plantings. Perhaps I indulged myself occasionally with a few patches of colorful favorites for the garden. Then I became married … and the demand for color, tulips and narcissi by my new bride, Catharine, became insistent. I began to add them to our garden in great numbers — a foolhardy thing to do, because it involved extra work I wasn't prepared to undertake.

While most recall drawing and painting in high school art classes, Laguna Beach students got to try their hand at a very unique medium. Thanks to a grant by Laguna Outreach for Community Arts, silk painter Olivia Batchelder has been mentoring 22 students in Bridget Beaudry-Porter's Introduction to Art classes at Laguna Beach High School. Vibrant colors and drawings of tulips, cherry blossoms and palm trees canvassed the table tops Wednesday as students finished up their silk paintings, which will be on display during their upcoming show at the Laguna Beach Nursery.

Like many, I’ve been surprised by winter’s desire to bring rain, wind and cold temperatures. But now, we all expect spring to march in, and with each passing day the odds of additional blustery weather are likely decreasing. Catharine, who has dedicated her weekends to tending to her apple and bulbs, between writing and surfing, is preparing a container for early girl tomatoes. Other garden fanatics, like Ann and Byron, have already planted lettuce and basil, and readied their garden for social gatherings.
