A new coffee and yogurt bar that caters to health nuts recently opened in Laguna Beach. Located at 1006 S. Coast Hwy. in the old Video Works building, Active Culture Yogurt and Health Bar is the first in town to offer USDA-certified frozen yogurt, smoothies and shakes, an owner said. "We wanted to promote a clean, active lifestyle and saw a need for it in this health-oriented community," said Faye Clapp, who co-owns the bar with her sister-in-law and fellow Laguna resident Jennifer Clapp.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT You know the holidays are coming when mountains of pumpkins appear at local supermarkets. It's not too early to finalize the guest list for your Thanksgiving feast and start thinking about what you'll serve. Either way, everything should taste wonderful and you shouldn't end up too exhausted to enjoy it. Through lots of trial and a fair amount of error, I've discovered a thing or two that will make Turkey Day (and every day)

Although Cafe Vienna has closed its doors, it doesn't look like Ferdinand Lettner has moved on from his love of European-style cafes. Goko Cafe, known for its eclectic menu of everything from burritos and sandwiches to gyros and acai bowls, closed shop June 7 and underwent a transformation in just three weeks. Kerry and Breshkai Berlin, who bought Goko Cafe three years ago, partnered up with Lettner for a new concept: Thalia Beach Cafe, which was unveiled to the public June 30. The surfboard upon the wall and the beachy vibe was traded in for a more sophisticated look - sleek tables and minimal decor - causing the red walls, previously covered with beach art, to pop. The cafe at 907 S. Coast Hwy. now serves crepes, wraps and sandwiches, along with salads, breakfast dishes and plenty of espresso drinks to choose from.

And those hands would have been streaked with the barbecue sauce from the chicken legs and ribs being served by restaurant employees. Arleta resident Mike Shanto was among those who lined up for a sampling of Roma's fare. "I love the food and I love the city and the music," Shanto said. San Fernando Boulevard between Orange Grove Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard was closed down for the event.

EDITOR?S NOTE : From time to time, the Gossiping Gourmets will be reviewing restaurants outside Laguna Beach in bordering areas close enough for residents to travel to easily. These columns will be called ?The Gallivanting Gourmet.? ? Less than a mile from the Laguna border is Monarch Bay Plaza, home of the Crab Cove Restaurant. This attractive Euro-Asian bistro has made the most of its strip mall location. The outdoor patio is masked from the parking lot by three contemporary water walls.
