Laguna Beach athletes Alek Burk and Troy Donenfeld helped lead the Costa Mesa-based club team Balboa 15 Quiksilver to the gold medal in the 15 Open Division tournament at the USA Junior Olympic Boys? Volleyball Championships in Sandy, Utah. In addition to Burk and Donenfeld, the Balboa 18-1?s, featuring Laguna All-CIF setter Clay Knapp, won the gold medal in its division, and the Balboa 16-1s, with Breakers Travis Woloson and Reed Thompson playing key roles, also won gold in its division.

Francie Holte, Peighton McRobie and Parker Noriega were two matches away from a gold medal. Competing for the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club girls? 12s team, the trio of Laguna Beach residents made it to the semifinals of the Gold division this week at the 30th annual USA Junior Olympics Girls? Volleyball Championships, held at Miami Beach Convention Center. Some are in Florida and some are in Arizona, but several Laguna Beach girls? volleyball players are continuing play this weekend.

With a league championship already in its possession, the Laguna Beach High girls' volley- ball team showed no signs of slowing down Wednesday when it hosted Calvary Chapel in the season finale for both teams. The Breakers polished off the Eagles, 25-13, 25-10, 25-7, to finish undefeated in their inaugural year in the Orange Coast League. The league championship is the 28th for the girls' program in 35 years of CIF competition. By winning for the ninth time in its last 10 outings, Laguna is now 22-5 overall and completed league play with a 9-0 mark.

The Laguna Beach Volleyball Club?s 14-and-under team won the 14-Open Division of the USA Junior National Southern California Qualifier Tournament held last weekend in Anaheim, beating top teams from the Southwestern United States. Two weeks earlier, the team won the Pacific Northwest Qualifier Tournament (14-Open Division), which was held in Spokane, Wash. The team is one of only a few volleyball teams in the nation that has qualified to compete in the 14-Open Division (the highest division for this age group)

Zoe Garrett and Mychaela Miller may be contributors in the indoor volleyball game for USC, but they showed they can do a thing or two on the sand as well. Garrett and Miller, the Laguna Beach High volleyball alumni, helped the Trojans win the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships on April 18. The event, part of the fourth annual Alt Games, was held in conjunction with the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour stop in Riverside. The tournament had four flights. Garrett and teammate Geena Urango won Flight B, defeating Texas?

They are just three years removed from accomplishing great things as teammates on the Laguna Beach High girls? volleyball team. Tonight though, they will be on opposite sides of the net as Pac-10 action gets underway. And, they will be Wildcats and Trojans on this night, not Breakers. University of Arizona sophomore Dana Hutchinson will battle against USC juniors Zoe Garrett and Mychaela Miller in the match at Arizona. And all three players have been pivotal to their teams?

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team finished the two-day OC Volleyball Championships in a tie for third-place. It was the highest finish at the prestigious tournament, hosted by Edison High, by a Laguna team since 1998. It was the 31st year of the tournament. Laguna Coach Lance Stewart is the only person to win the tournament both as a player and head coach. He was tournament MVP when Laguna won the event in 1981, and coached the squad to the 1989 title.

Mike Sciacca A strong standing throughout the year and a strong finish to the regular season has earned the Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball team a first-round bye in the CIF-Southern Section Boys' Volleyball Championships Division II tournament. The tournament begins tonight with first-round action. The Division II final will be played Saturday, May 28, at Cypress College. Laguna will host the winner of tonight's first-round matchup between Los Padres League champion Santa Ynez and Golden West League No. 3 Lancaster, Tuesday in a 7 p.m. second-round game at Dugger Gymnasium.

So the final match of the 2006 season didn't turn out the way the Laguna Beach High girls' volleyball team had hoped it would Saturday. Still, a five-game loss to Campolindo of Moraga in the CIF State Volleyball Championships Division III final in San Jose could not dampen a season that was anything less than stellar. Laguna's bid to win the school's first state title in the sport was denied by Campolindo which held on to edge the Breakers, 25-21, 15-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13, at San Jose State University.
